A project panel was established to provide guidelines for the rehabilitation of concrete pavements in Colorado. Techniques used by other state highway agencies were compared to the type and severity of concrete pavement distress observed in-state. Representatives from the concrete and asphalt pavement paving organizations were also invited to provide input to the study. Suggested methods are provided to renew the design life of deteriorated concrete pavements. Alternative methods of construction from which to choose are included along with examples for comparing life cycle costs.

The ventilation system at the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel was studied to determine the most energy efficient means of operation. The tunnel is a twin bore highway facility 8,940 feet long having a fully transverse ventilation system. Of the four mechanisms responsible for natural ventilation (piston effect, barometric pressure differentials, chimney effect, and outside wind effects) only the piston effect was found to be reliable. The TUNVEN computer model was found to be an excellent tunnel design and analysis tool. Through its application, a seasonal variation in airflow caused by icing in the flues was discovered.

A gravel arrester bed type Runaway Truck Escape Ramp was built on a 5.2% downgrade along I-70 in Mt. Vernon Canyon, Colorado. The ramp was completed in July 1979 and to date it has stopped fifty-three runaway or potentially runaway trucks. A closed circuit TV surveillance system was included as part of the project, and twenty-three trucks were recorded on video tape as they used the escape ramp.
