Book Description
"When twenty-eight-year-old Gustavo Dudamel ascended the podium at the Hollywood Bowl for his inaugural concert as conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he immediately captivated the hearts of his audience and the minds of critics, who designated him a modern-day Leonard Bernstein. In this beautifully woven narrative, the young maestro's story becomes the entry point to an equally captivating subject: El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education program that took Dudamel from child violinist to conductor extraordinaire."--Jacket.

Book Description
One of the most astonishing aspects of juvenile crime is how little is known about the impact of the policies and programs put in place to fight it. The most commonly used strategies and programs for combating juvenile delinquency problems primarily rely on intuition and fads. Fortunately, as a result of the promising new research documented in Changing Lives, these deficiencies in our juvenile justice system might quickly be remedied. Peter W. Greenwood here demonstrates here that as crimes rates have fallen, researchers have identified more connections between specific risk factors and criminal behavior, while program developers have discovered a wide array of innovative interventions. The result of all this activity, he reveals, has been the revelation of a few prevention models that reduce crime much more cost-effectively than popular approaches such as tougher sentencing, D.A.R.E., boot camps, and "scared straight" programs. Changing Lives expertly presents the most promising of these prevention programs, their histories, the quality of evidence to support their effectiveness, the public policy programs involved in bringing them into wider use, and the potential for investments and developmental research to increase the range and quality of programs.

Book Description
In The Lives in Objects, Jessica Yirush Stern presents a thoroughly researched and engaging study of the deerskin trade in the colonial Southeast, equally attentive to British American and Southeastern Indian cultures of production, distribution, and consumption. Stern upends the long-standing assertion that Native Americans were solely gift givers and the British were modern commercial capitalists. This traditional interpretation casts Native Americans as victims drawn into and made dependent on a transatlantic marketplace. Stern complicates that picture by showing how both the Southeastern Indian and British American actors mixed gift giving and commodity exchange in the deerskin trade, such that Southeastern Indians retained much greater agency as producers and consumers than the standard narrative allows. By tracking the debates about Indian trade regulation, Stern also reveals that the British were often not willing to embrace modern free market values. While she sheds new light on broader issues in native and colonial history, Stern also demonstrates that concepts of labor, commerce, and material culture were inextricably intertwined to present a fresh perspective on trade in the colonial Southeast.

Book Description
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE THE WORLD, OR AT LEAST THE PIECE OF IT YOU'RE STANDING ON? Over the past twenty years, we've seen a paradigmatic shift in the view of corporate engagement in social change. More corporations are looking beyond their core business to find ways to engage with consumers and stakeholders as change agents, whether it's to promote economic development in historically underserved communities or to promote human rights and social justice. Every day, more individuals and corporations are stepping up to say, "Asking the questions isn't enough; we need to be part of the answer." Organizations across varied industries are choosing to engage with challenges presented in their communities, because consumers and communities have heightened expectations that businesses will lean in to fill gaps in societal needs that government and independent individual efforts either cannot or have not addressed. This book is for you, social change agents, forward-thinking institutions, and disruptors, no matter who you are or where you work. Yes, your organization can make a powerful difference--and in this book Barry Ostrowsky and Michellene Davis share the insights, successes and failures, and strategies that RWJBarnabas Health has adopted through its ongoing process of turning its corporate ship toward its expanded mission.
