Book Description
Artefacts made from skeletal materials since the Roman period were, before this book, neglected as a serious area of study. This is a comprehensive account which reviews over fifty categories of artefact. The book starts with a consideration of the formation, morphology and mechanical properties of the materials and illuminates characteristics concerning working with them. Following chapters discuss the organisation of the industry and trade in such items, including the changing status of the industry over time. Archaeological evidence is combined with that from historical and ethnological sources, with many illustrations providing key visual reference. Originally published in 1985.

Book Description
Neither towns nor villas, the function of Roman road-side settlements has previously been regarded as a mystery. Wilcote, however, has now been thoroughly investigated and Anthony Hands suggests in this publication that it may have functioned as both a watering post for travellers along Akeman Street and as a kind of navvies' encampment for road maintenance (connected with large quarries reported on in this volume). The 1993-1996 finds report contains details of coins, pottery and metal objects of quite high value, compared with the negligible architecture. Do the finds reflect the inhabitants of the settlement or the passing trade? With stimulating commentary on some of the theoretical issues generated by this long running excavation as well as fine illustration of the discoveries, this is an excellent excavation report.

Book Description
Between 1989 and 1991, excavations in the parish of Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, unearthed remains of an Anglo-Saxon settlement associated with one of the largest collections of artefacts and animal bones yet found on such a site. In an unprecedented occupation sequence from an Anglo-Saxon rural settlement, six main periods of occupation have been identified, dating from the seventh to the early eleventh centuries; with a further period of activity, between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries AD. The remains of approximately forty buildings and other structures were uncovered; and due to the survival of large refuse deposits, huge quantities of artefacts and faunal remains were encountered compared with most other rural settlements of the period. Volume 2 contains detailed presentation of some 10,000 recorded finds, over 6,000 sherds of pottery, and many other residues and bulk finds, illustrated with 213 blocks of figures and 67 plates, together with discussion of their significance. It presents the most comprehensive, and currently unique picture of daily life on a rural settlement of this period in eastern England, and is an assemblage of Europe wide significance to Anglo-Saxon and early medieval archaeologists.
