The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the potential for growth in use of liquid natural gas (LNG) fueled trucks. . A system dynamics model was constructed for the analysis and a variety of scenarios were investigated. The analysis considers the economics of LNG fuel in the context of the trucking industry to identify barriers to the increased use of LNG trucks and potential interventions or leverage points which may overcome these barriers. The study showed that today, LNG use in trucks is not yet economically viable. A large change in the savings from fuel cost or capital cost is needed for the technology to take off. Fleet owners have no way now to benefit from the environmental benefits of LNG fuel nor do they benefit from the clean burning nature of the fuel. Changes in the fuel cost differential between diesel and LNG are not a research issue. However, quantifying the improvements in reliability and wear from the use of clean fuel could support increased maintenance and warranty periods. Many people involved in the use of LNG for trucks believe that LNG has the potential to occupy a niche within the larger diesel truck business. But if LNG in trucks can become economic, the spread of fuel stations and technology improvements could lead to LNG trucks becoming the dominant technology. An assumption in our simulation work is that LNG trucks will be purchased when economically attractive. None of the simulation results show LNG becoming economic but then only to the level of a niche market.

Natural gas is the cleanest burning alternative transportation fuel on the market. It is domestically available, cheap, and safe. The market for natural gas vehicles continues to grow in the United States, but not at its potential. The heavy-duty fleet sector has seen tremendous improvements in natural gas vehicle and equipment reliability, but there are existing factors that discourage fleets from transitioning to natural gas fuel. Even in an environment where diesel prices are low, natural gas fuel can continue to benefit heavy-duty truck fleets. This research proposes critical success factors of natural gas fuel transition projects for heavy-duty trucks. Five key propositions were identified through a cross-case analysis of exploratory data gathered through interviews with six corporations. Corporations who utilize natural gas trucks were compared with corporations who have not made the transition. The purpose of this study is to influence the direction of natural gas vehicle research and spark the interest of corporations, who utilize heavy-duty trucks, to investigate whether natural gas fuel could successfully meet their transportation needs.

From the Executive Summary: This report compares the NGV markets in Italy, New Zealand, the United States and Canada with the emphasis on identifying reasons why natural gas is an attractive fuel for vehicles in Italy and New Zealand while apparently much less so in the U.S. and Canada. Identifying the reasons for low NGV penetration in Canada suggests means by which NGV can be made more competitive with conventional sources of transportation energy. The research has indicated that serious obstacles have so far prevented NGV from becoming the fuel of choice for many potential vehicle convertors. This thesis explores economic and environmental benefits generated by natural gas use in transportation. The analysis of natural gas vehicles and compressed natural gas markets is performed for the US and worldwide with an emphasis on the leaders in the industry. The US market is analyzed in detail to report current state of technology and fueling infrastructure countrywide. Vehicles and equipment supply, prices, and performance are reported to acknowledge the reader and to contrast the US NGV market with other markets worldwide. Also, prices of the natural gas technology are being discussed to explain principal differences and uniqueness of the market particularly in the US compared with other nations. The thesis analyzes emissions impact of natural gas in comparison to other alternative fuels available on the market. To reveal hidden costs of energy, a life-cycle emission approach is used to quantify emissions starting from a stage of fuel extraction up to a stage of fuel processing in a vehicle. The GREET model is used to quantify of greenhouse gases and criteria pollutants for variety of fuels, including natural gas, electricity, hydrogen, biodiesel, etc., using cleanest fuel production pathways. The thesis also includes the relative emissions of natural gas compared to other alternative and conventional fuels. This work summarizes practical experience gained by successful NGV users and applies this information to perform a cost-benefit analysis for seven actual fleets operating in Wyoming. A major objective of the cost-benefit analysis is to emphasize the diversity of applications where natural gas provides significant fuel cost and environmental benefits and to provide examples when natural gas fails to succeed due to low benefits and high costs. This analysis shows that there is no general rule that could be applied to all fleets; rather, each case needs to be analyzed separately to identify fleet-specific costs and benefits. Results of the analysis support earlier findings that heavy-duty fleets, such as transit buses, heavy-duty trucks, refuse collection fleets, and school buses remain the best candidates for natural gas conversion due to a low fuel economy, and moderately big annual mileage.
