Book Description
The evolution of a long pulse (pulse length much greater than the slippage distance) in a tapered wiggler free electron laser oscillator is studied by numerical solution of the one dimensional theoretical model for a realistic set of magnet, electron beam, and optical resonator parameter values. Single pass gain curves are calculated for low and high light intensities. It is found that an initial, low amplitude, incoherent pulse grows into a coherent pulse whose growth rate agrees with the calculated small signal gain curve. The transient evolution of coherent pulses is calculated for several different cavity length detunings, and a quasi-steady-state desynchronism curve is obtained. Various pulse features for two points along the desynchronism curve are given. The frequency changing behavior (chirping) of the optical pulse during transient evolution is examined.

Book Description
This book is the definitive tutorial text and reference work on free electron lasers. Since the publication of the first edition in 1992 there has been a significant increase both in the number of free-electron lasers in use worldwide, and in the understanding of the various regimes for these devices. In order to maintain the position of this book as the most comprehensive and thorough reference and tutorial in the field, the authors have completely updated the book. In addition to updates and corrections to chapters in the first edition, new chapters have been added.

Book Description
The one-dimensional theory of short pulse propagation in free electron lasers is extended to tapered wiggler devices and is used to study the behavior of an oscillator with parameter values close to those expected in forthcoming experiments. It is found that stable laser output is possible only over a small range of optical cavity lengths. Optical pulse characteristcs are presented and are found to change considerably over this range.

Book Description
The development of lasers in which the active medium is a relativistic stream of free electrons has evoked much interest. The prospect of operating these continuously tunable, high gain devices at high efficiencies by appropriately tapering the wiggler field parameters has significantly increased the interest in these devices. Variable parameter wiggler free electron laser have been previously considered for operation in the amplifier configuration and also in the micro-pulse, low gain operation in the oscillator configuration. The present analysis extends the range of application to the case of intense, long pulsed electron beams in which the self-consistently derived space charge potential (arising from the axial bunching of the particles in the beat wave) is not negligible. Also included in this analysis are arbitrarily relativistic beams (i.e., no ultra-relativistic beam approximation). We have obtained theoretical expressions for the nonlinear efficiency and present a comparison of these results with a fully nonlinear simulation.

Book Description
The development of an optical pulse of finite axial extent is studied by means of an axisymmetric, time-dependent, particle simulation code for different rates of tapering of the wiggler field. The results illustrate a number of the physical phenomena underlying the free-electron laser mechanism. These include: suppression of the sideband instability; the role of gain focusing versus that of refractive guiding; efficiency enhancement; and pulse slippage. It is found that a significant reduction in the sideband modulation of the optical field can be achieved with a faster tapering of the wiggler parameters. Increasing the tapering rate also reduces refractive guiding, causing the optical wavefronts to become more convex, thus spreading the optical field into a large cross-section. The corresponding enhancement of the peak output power is associated with an increased lateral extent of the optical field rather than an increase in the field amplitude. (Author).
