Les troubles oro-myofonctionnels désignent des comportements musculaires inappropriés de la langue, des lèvres, des joues, des mâchoires, du voile du palais lors de la réalisation des fonctions oro-myo-faciales, à savoir la respiration, la déglutition, l'articulation et la mastication. Ces anomalies entravent le développement fonctionnel et morphologique du massif facial et impactent la santé de l'enfant et de l'adulte. Leur traitement mobilise l'intervention de divers professionnels de santé et nécessite des prises en soins orthophoniques. Prévenir l'installation et l'aggravation des troubles oro-myofonctionnels chez le jeune enfant paraît alors indispensable. Un premier questionnaire a permis de réaliser un état des lieux du besoin d'informations dans ce domaine auprès de treize médecins généralistes et de six pédiatres. Un médecin en santé publique a été inclus dans l'étude. Le niveau de connaissances des professionnels et la prévention semblaient limités. 50% des professionnels ne connaissaient pas le terme de « troubles des fonctions oro-myo-faciales ». Seuls trois facteurs de risque étaient majoritairement connus. 45% des professionnels faisaient rarement de la prévention à ce sujet et 15% n'en faisaient jamais. Les anomalies de ventilation, les freins buccaux restrictifs et les déformations d'articulé dentaire ne faisaient pas ou peu l'objet d'investigation orthophonique. Nous avons élaboré une plaquette d'information décrivant les facteurs de risque et les signes cliniques de dysfonctionnements repérables chez l'enfant de 0 à 6 ans et précisant les démarches de coordination de soins. Un second sondage a été proposé pour évaluer le support mais seulement sept professionnels, dont trois présents au début de l'étude, y ont répondu. Une analyse qualitative a montré un enrichissement des connaissances concernant les facteurs de risque et le rôle de l'orthophoniste et une augmentation relative de la vigilance des prescripteurs. Malheureusement, la fréquence de prévention n'a pas augmenté significativement. D'autres actions seront nécessaires pour sensibiliser les professionnels à la nécessité d'une prévention et d'une interception précoce des troubles oro-myofonctionnels.
