Este trabalho resulta de uma investigação em Museologia e Património Cultural sobre a concetualização do Museu Nacional da Ciência e da Técnica (1971-1976). Pretende-se dar a conhecer o contexto em que emerge o Museu, as suas influências, a sua estrutura, a sua projeção e dificuldade de reconhecimento no seio da comunidade museológica. Este Museu foi pensado e construído por Mário Silva, eminente físico conimbricense, que se doutorou com a Nobel Madame Marie Curie, no início do século XX. O único Museu nacional dedicado à ciência e à tecnologia, classificado na chamada “primeira geração”, foi impulsionado sob a égide do então Ministro da Educação Nacional, o Prof. Veiga Simão, em tempo marcelista. Na época, Mário Silva e os seus colaboradores estudaram os melhores exemplos da museologia das ciências e das técnicas para desenharem um projeto ambicioso e atualizado. Percorre-se desde o Musée des Arts et Métiers parisiense ao Exploratorium de São Francisco para se conhecer os seus contributos na evolução da museologia e a sua influência no projeto português. A instalação condigna da sede do Museu, a ideia de instituto, de museu nacional, de descentralização, de rede guiaram as preocupações daquele mentor e nem sempre foram compreendidas ou levadas a bom termo. Merece destaque a atividade expositiva, logo desde 1973, constituindo a face visível do Museu. Na formação do “recheio” ou coleção, impressiona a pretensão de inventariar todo o material existente em estabelecimentos oficiais de ensino.

Thus far in the history of biology, two, and only two, fundamental principles have come to light that pervade and unify the entire science-the cell theory and the concept of evolution. While it is true that recently opened fields of inves tigation have given rise to several generalizations of wide impact, such as the universality of DNA and the energetic dynamics of ecology, closer inspection reveals them to be part and parcel of either of the first two mentioned. Because in the final analysis energy can act upon an organism solely at the cellular level, its effects may be perceived basically to represent one facet of cell me tabolism. Similarly, because the DNA theory centers upon the means by which cells build proteins and reproduce themselves, it too proves to be only one more, even though an exciting, aspect of the cell theory. In fact, if the matter is given closer scrutiny, evolution itself can be viewed as being a fundamental portion of the cell concept, for its effects arise only as a consequence of changes in the cell's genetic apparatus accumulating over geological time. Or, if one wishes, the diametrically opposite standpoint may be taken. For, if current concepts of the origin of life hold any validity, the evolution of precellular organisms from the primordial biochemicals must have proceeded over many eons of time prior to the advent of even the most primitive cell.

Since the last International Astronomical Union Symposium that dealt with matters cosmological, there have been dramatic advances, both on the observational and theoretical fronts. Modern high-efficiency detectors have made possible extensive magnitude-limited redshift surveys, which have permitted observational cosmologists to construct three-dimensional maps of large regions of space. What seems to emerge is a distribution of matter in extensive, flat, but probably filamentary, and possibly interconnected, superclusters, serving as interstices between vast voids in space. Meanwhile, theoretical ideas that were highly speculative a few years ago have begun to be taken seriously as possibly describing conditions in the very early universe. This book presents a significant amount of structural, paleomagnetic and magnetic fabric data in the Central High Atlas (Morocco). The authors thoroughly described and analyzed the present-day structure of this intraplate chain through 22 of cross-sections, potential field data analysis and 3D reconstruction. In addition, the authors propose a palinspastic reconstruction of the structure of the basin at 100 Ma (i.e., post-extension and pre-compression) to finally evaluate its Mesozoic and Cenozoic geodynamic evolution. This books presents (1) a unique three-dimensional model at the chain scale, (2) an analysis of the ca. 100 Ma remagnetization, to perform palinspastic restorations of most representative structures, (3) as well as the interpretation of the magnetic fabrics in order to unravel the tectonic or deformation setting that the rocks underwent in different parts of the basin. This book is of interest to structural geologists in Northern Africa, the Mediterranean and Iberia, as well as to those interested in inverted intraplate basins and paleomagnetists from around the planet.
