The primary concrete properties studied were compressive strength, split-tensile strength, and deicer scaling resistance. Material variations included four sources of ordinary portland cement and two types of coarse aggregate. Strength properties were studied at room temperature and 40°F mix and curing conditions. Deicer scaling resistance was studied for concrete cured under six curing conditions. Carbonation of concrete cured under these six conditions was also investigated.

This study evaluates Grade 120 Granulated Ground Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) and its effect on the properties of hydraulic cement concretes used in structural and pavement construction. Several mix designs, structural and pavement, were used for this evaluation with varying amounts of GGBFS used as a substitution for cement. These substitutions were a percentage by weight substitution. This study looked at the effects of slag on workability, constructability, durability and the compressive strength of the concrete. How GGBFS affected the concrete's set times was also critical in establishing the maximum substitution amount for Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) concrete structures and pavements. In addition, an informal telephone survey was taken with other state DOTs concerning their use and experience using GGBFS in concrete. This further assisted DOTD in the development of their own specifications for GGBFS concretes.

Tests were performed under separate contracts at different times for three manufacturers of ground granulated blast-furnace slag to determine the performance of their products with portland cement. Physical tests were performed on pastes, mortars, and concretes to determine both freshly mixed and hardened properties. The effects of gypsum addition, fineness of slag, and levels of replacement in cement-slag combinations were evaluated. Physical tests performed on pastes and mortars included time of setting, compressive strength, and volume stability. In the mortar compressive strength series, various curing regimens were evaluated with respect to strength development. Included were normal moist curing at 23°C (73°F) and 4.4°C (40°F) and 100% relative humidity, and accelerated atmospheric curing [71°C(160°F)] and 100% relative humidity. Tests conducted on concretes containing slag included compressive strength, freeze-thaw durability, and resistance to deicer chemicals (scaling). Measurements of air-void systems of hardened concretes were made. Results generally show that use of slag can be beneficial without resulting in significant technical problems or adverse construction problems.

Masonry walls constitute the interface between the building's interior and the outdoor environment. Masonry walls are traditionally composed of fired-clay bricks (solid or perforated) or blocks (concrete or earth-based), but in the past (and even in the present) they were often associated as needing an extra special thermal and acoustical insulation layer. However, over more recent years investigations on thermal and acoustical features has led to the development of new improved bricks and blocks that no longer need these insulation layers. Traditional masonry units (fired-clay bricks, concrete or earth-based blocks) that don't offer improved performance in terms of thermal and acoustical insulation are a symbol of a low-technology past, that are far removed from the demands of sustainable construction.This book provides an up-to-date state-of-the-art review on the eco-efficiency of masonry units, particular emphasis is placed on the design, properties, performance, durability and LCA of these materials.
