The second edition builds on this success, gathering recent information on international trends and data for diabetes mellitus. In particular, the book highlights the dramatic rise of Type 2 diabetes in children, adolescents and the elderly throughout the world. One new section features prevention and screening of both Type1 and Type 2 diabetes. Other new chapters cover the epidemiology of obesity and the impact of nutrition, and review available guidelines for better worldwide glycemic control. Future challenges, including the effects of antipsychotic treatment and HIV infection and therapy on diabetes, are also addressed. All chapters have been completely revised and updated, covering: definitions, classification and risk factors for diabetes new evidence for screening and prevention of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes epidemiology of complications and associated risk factors economic aspects: the direct and indirect costs of diabetes. The Epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus fills the need for a current compendium of diabetes epidemiology in the tradition of the first monumental text of the late Kelly West. It is essential reading for general practitioners, diabetologists, clinical endocrinologists, cardiologists, epidemiologists, nurses, dieticians, and other diabetes care providers, as well as health care decision makers.

Book Description
Abstract: The effects of pregnancy-related physiological changes on carbohydrate metabolism, pre-diabetic states, and influences on fetal growth were the themes of an international Colloquium in 1973. The papers presented dealt with not only the physiological aspects of pregnancy and diabetes, such as maternal-fetal metabolic interrelationships and renal handling of glucose, but the advances in understanding the endocrine system, the histology of the fetal pancreas, and clinical care and diagnosis of diabetic pregnancies. Scientific methods of investigating pregnancy and the newborn infant have evolved into an interdisciplinary approach, which contributes to early diagnosis, understanding the influence of the fetus on pregnancy outcome, the importance of genetics, and many other aspects of diabetes and pregnancy.

Book Description
The authors present an overview of gender-based violence (GBV) in Latin America, with special emphasis on good practice interventions to prevent GBV or offer services to its survivors or perpetrators. Intimate partner violence and sexual coercion are the most common forms of GBV, and these are the types of GBV that they analyze. GBV has serious consequences for women's health and well-being, ranging from fatal outcomes, such as homicide, suicide, and AIDS-related deaths, to nonfatal outcomes, such as physical injuries, chronic pain syndrome, gastrointestinal disorders, complications during pregnancy, miscarriage, and low birth-weight of children. GBV also poses significant costs for the economies of developing countries, including lower worker productivity and incomes, and lower rates of accumulation of human and social capital. The authors examine good practice approaches in justice, health, education, and multisectoral approaches. In each sector, they identify good practices for: (1) law and policies; (2) institutional reforms; (3) community-level interventions; and (4) individual behavior change strategies.

Book Description
The medical liability crisis continues to grow at an alarming rate and has particularly impacted perinatal and neonatal practice. This book focuses on issues which have a high vulnerability to claims of medical negligence. Its objective is the recognition of high-risk situations and the appropriate means to diagnose, treat, and document the response to such situations. Emphasis on record keeping, communication, and anticipatory behaviour is stressed. Chapters are accompanied by commentaries aimed at presenting alternative strategies. Authors have been chosen for their expertise in the subject and their abilities to communicate their points of view. This unique text focuses on an aspect of medical and nursing practice which has become a major area of importance in the medico-legal arena. The editors have made a special effort to aid both the medical and legal sectors in understanding the important issues involved in medical negligence cases. This book will help remedy this situation by examining the "red flags" in several high risk situations to enable the development of a prospective approach to risk management. The contributors are internationally recognised experts from the field of obstetrics, neonatology, nursing and hospital administration, as well as the legal profession. The editors believe that this book will serve to bring about changes in the behaviour of health care professionals which will ultimately improve the quality of care that they give to their patients. This text should be on the bookshelf of any individual involved in the medical care of the pregnant woman and her newborn.
