Book Description
This book is the second of two volumes that present the main results which emerged from the project CIP - Computer-Aided, Intuition-Guided Programming - at the Technical University of Munich. Its central theme is program development by transformation, a methodology which is becoming more and more important. Whereas Volume I contains the description and formal specification of a wide spectrum language CIP-L particularly tailored to the needs of transformational programming, Volume II serves a double purpose: First, it describes a system, called CIP-S, that is to assist a programmer in the method of transformational programming. Second, it gives a non-toy example for this very method, since it contains a formal specification of the system core and transformational developments for the more interesting system routines. Based on a formal calculus of program transformations, the informal requirements for the system are stated. Then the system core is formally specified using the algebraic data types and the pre-algorithmic logical constructs of the wide spectrum language CIP-L. It is demonstrated how executable, procedural level programs can be developed from this specification according to formal rules. The extensive collection of these rules is also contained in the book; it can be used as the basis for further developments using this method. Since the system has been designed in such a way that it is parameterized with the concrete programming language to be transformed, the book also contains a guide how to actualize this parameter; the proceeding is exemplified with a small subset of CIP-L.

Book Description
The formation and evolution of complex dynamical structures is one of the most exciting areas of nonlinear physics. Such pattern formation problems are common in practically all systems involving a large number of interacting components. Here, the basic problem is to understand how competing physical forces can shape stable geometries and to explain why nature prefers just these. Motivation for the intensive study of pattern formation phenomena during the past few years derives from an increasing appreciation of the remarkable diversity of behaviour encountered in nonlinear systems and of universal features shared by entire classes of nonlinear processes. As physics copes with ever more ambi tious problems in pattern formation, summarizing our present state of knowledge becomes a pressing issue. This volume presents an overview of selected topics in this field of current interest. It deals with theoretical models of pattern formation and with simulations that bridge the gap between theory and experiment. The book is a product of the International Symposium on the Physics of Structure Formation, held from October 27 through November 2, 1986, at the Institute for Information Sciences of the University of Tiibingen. The symposium brought together a group of distinguished scientists from various disciplines to exchange ideas about recent advances in pattern formation in the physical sciences, and also to introduce young scientists to the fi

Book Description
Rewriting has always played an important role in symbolic manipulation and automated deduction systems. The theory of rewriting is an outgrowth of Combinatory Logic and the Lambda Calculus. Applications cover broad areas in automated reasoning, programming language design, semantics, and implementations, and symbolic and algebraic manipulation. The proceedings of the third International Conference on Rewriting Techniques and Applications contain 34 regular papers, covering many diverse aspects of rewriting (including equational logic, decidability questions, term rewriting, congruence-class rewriting, string rewriting, conditional rewriting, graph rewriting, functional and logic programming languages, lazy and parallel implementations, termination issues, compilation techniques, completion procedures, unification and matching algorithms, deductive and inductive theorem proving, Gröbner bases, and program synthesis). It also contains 12 descriptions of implemented equational reasoning systems. Anyone interested in the latest advances in this fast growing area should read this volume.

Book Description
This volume describes recent research in graph reduction and related areas of functional and logic programming, as reported at a workshop in 1986. The papers are based on the presentations, and because the final versions were prepared after the workshop, they reflect some of the discussions as well. Some benefits of graph reduction can be found in these papers: - A mathematically elegant denotational semantics - Lazy evaluation, which avoids recomputation and makes programming with infinite data structures (such as streams) possible - A natural tasking model for fine-to-medium grain parallelism. The major topics covered are computational models for graph reduction, implementation of graph reduction on conventional architectures, specialized graph reduction architectures, resource control issues such as control of reduction order and garbage collection, performance modelling and simulation, treatment of arrays, and the relationship of graph reduction to logic programming.

Book Description
This volume contains the reviewed papers presented at the 12th International Conference on Automated Deduction (CADE-12) held at Nancy, France in June/July 1994. The 67 papers presented were selected from 177 submissions and document many of the most important research results in automated deduction since CADE-11 was held in June 1992. The volume is organized in chapters on heuristics, resolution systems, induction, controlling resolutions, ATP problems, unification, LP applications, special-purpose provers, rewrite rule termination, ATP efficiency, AC unification, higher-order theorem proving, natural systems, problem sets, and system descriptions.
