Book Description
Excerpt from Eulogy on George Washington The composition, now with all due deference offered to the public, was originally prepared at the request of some of the inhabitants of Georgetown, with a view to its being delivered in the Episcopal Church, on the 22d of February last; but various circumstances intervened, and the author with pleasure saw the task to which he felt himself incompetent devolve upon the very respectable and reverend gentleman, whose more peculiar province it is to address the public in that sacred place, and who was every way so well qualified to do justice to the subject: He could not however, deny himself the satisfaction of manifesting his readiness to comply with the wishes of his fellow citizens, as far as the powers of his mind admit, and he embraces with readiness the opportunity thus accidentally offered him of testifying his veneration for the memory of General Washington.
