This is the first etymological dictionary of Proto-Celtic to be published after a hundred years, synthesizing the work of several generations of Celtic scholars. It contains a reconstructed lexicon of Proto-Celtic with ca. 1500 entries. The principal lemmata are alphabetically arranged words reconstructed for Proto-Celtic. Each lemma contains the reflexes of the Proto-Celtic words in the individual Celtic languages, the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) roots from which they developed, as well as the cognate forms from other Indo-European languages. The focus is on the development of forms from PIE to Proto-Celtic, but histories of individual words are explained in detail, and each lemma is accompanied by an extensive bibliography. The introduction contains an overview of the phonological developments from PIE to Proto-Celtic, and the volume includes an appendix treating the probable loanwords from unknown non-IE substrates in Proto-Celtic.

Gaelic belongs to the Celtic group of languages, and the Celtic is itself a branch of the Indo-European or Aryan family of speech; for it has been found that the languages of Europe (with the exception of Turkish, Hungarian, Basque, and Ugro-Finnish), and those of Asia from the Caucasus to Ceylon, resemble each other in grammar and vocabulary to such an extent that they must all be considered as descended from one parent or original tongue. This parent tongue is variously called the Aryan, Indo-European, Indo-Germanic, and even the Indo-Celtic language. It was spoken, it is believed, some three thousand years B.C. in ancient Sarmatia or South Russia ; and from this as centre the speakers of the Aryan tongue, which even then showed dialectical differences, radiated east, west, north and south to the various countries now occupied by the descendant languages. The civilization of the primitive Aryans appears to have been an earlier and more nomadic form of that presented to us by the Celtic tribe of the Helvetii in Caesar's time. Here a number of village communities, weary of the work of agriculture, or led by the desire of better soil, cut their crops, pulled down their lightly built houses and huts, packed child and chattel on the waggons with their teams of oxen, and sought their fortune in a distant land. In this way the Celts and the Italians parted from the old Aryan home to move up the Danube, the former settling on the Rhine and the latter on the Gulf of Venice. The other races went their several ways -- the Indians and Iranians eastward across the steppes, the Teutons went to the north-west, and the Hellenes to the south.

This book discusses the origin and history of the grammatical category of gender in the Indo-European family of languages. Gender systems of Proto-Indo-European (PIE), and of the various daughter languages are assessed from historical, typological, and areal points of view. In addition, common properties and tendencies (or drift) in the development of gender in different Indo-European branches are presented. The formal and semantic principles of gender assignment in PIE are examined on the basis of a reconstructed lexicon of PIE nouns, and the scope of gender agreement in the proto-language is reconstructed by comparing the agreement rules in the early Indo-European dialects. The Early PIE two-gender system and the development of the feminine gender in Late PIE are also discussed, and finally the PIE gender system is contrasted with the typologically rather different gender systems found in the neighboring areas of Eurasia.

The book you have in your hands has its distant ancestor in an International Symposium held at the University of Salamanca in September 2011 (2nd-4th) and entitled «Continental Celtic Word Formation. The Onomastic Data». The idea for this gathering arose from a series of conversations between Juan Luis García Alonso, Patrick Sims-Williams and Alexander Falileyev in Aberystwyth in March 2010. This book is undoubtedly indebted to this previous event (belonging in a series that we might call our «Ptolemy Workshops», held in Aberystwyth in 1999 (Ptolemy: Towards a linguistic atlas of the earliest Celtic place-names of Europe, edited by David Parsons and Patrick SimsWilliams, Aberystwyth, 2000), Innsbruck in 2000, Madrid in 2002 (New Approaches to Celtic Place Names in Ptolemy’s Geography, edited by Javier de Hoz, Eugenio Luján and Patrick Sims-Williams, Madrid, 2005), Munich in 2004, and Salamanca in 2006 (Celtic and Other Languages in Ancient Europe, edited by Juan Luis García Alonso, Salamanca, 2008). In any case, this book is an ulterior development of what was discussed in the 2011 Salamanca gathering. The new approach this time, as can be clearly appreciated from the title chosen, consisted in a specific look at the word formation of proper names in order to both gain a more accurate idea of how Celtic proper names are formed and furnish ourselves with further tools to identify a specifically doubtful name as Celtic beyond the tricky and slippery path of etymological analysis.

This volume offers a discussion of the phonological and morphological development of Old Irish and its Indo-European origins. The emphasis is on the relative chronology of sound changes and on the development of the verbal system.
