Book Description
DES MESURES DE SPECTROSCOPIE LASER PAR IONISATION RESONNANTE ONT ETE EFFECTUEES SUR LES ISOTOPES DEFICIENTS EN NEUTRONS DE L'IRIDIUM 1 8 2 - 1 8 9IR, 1 8 6IR M ET LES ISOTOPES STABLES 1 9 1 , 1 9 3IR. LES SPECTRES HYPERFINS ONT ETE CONSTITUES POUR LA TRANSITION ATOMIQUE A 351,7 NM ENTRE L'ETAT FONDAMENTAL 5D 76S 2 4F 9 / 2 ET L'ETAT EXCITE 5D 76S6P 6F 1 1 / 2. LES ISOTOPES RADIOACTIFS DE L'IRIDIUM ONT ETE OBTENUS PAR LA DECROISSANCE +/EC DES NOYAUX DE MERCURE RADIOACTIFS IMPLANTES SUR UN SUPPORT DE GRAPHITE. LES NOYAUX DE MERCURE RADIOACTIFS ONT ETE PRODUITS A ISOLDE AU CERN PAR SPALLATION, EN BOMBARDANT UNE CIBLE DE PLOMB FONDU AVEC LE FAISCEAU DE PROTON DE 1 GEV DU PS-BOOSTER. LES MOMENTS DIPOLAIRES MAGNETIQUES ET QUADRUPOLAIRES SPECTROSCOPIQUES ONT ETE EXTRAITS DES SPECTRES HYPERFINS. LA VARIATION DU RAYON CARRE MOYEN DE CHARGE, DEDUITE DU DEPLACEMENT ISOTOPIQUE DU CENTRE DE GRAVITE DE CES SPECTRES, PRESENTE UNE RUPTURE ENTRE 1 8 7IR ET 1 8 6IR 9 QUI S'ACCOMPAGNE D'UNE AUGMENTATION BRUSQUE DE LA DEFORMATION : DE 2 0,16 A 2 > 0,2. CES RESULTATS ONT ETE ANALYSES DANS LE CADRE D'UN MODELE A ROTOR AXIAL PLUS UNE ET DEUX QUASIPARTICULES. LES FONCTIONS D'ONDE DES CURS D'OSMIUM ET DE PLATINE UTILISEES POUR DECRIRE LES NOYAUX D'IRIDIUM ONT ETE CALCULEES PAR LA METHODE HF + BCS AVEC L'INTERACTION DE SKYRME SIII. LES CURS ONT ETE CONTRAINTS A ADOPTER LA VALEUR EXPERIMENTALE DU PARAMETRE DE DEFORMATION DE L'IRIDIUM EXTRAITE DU DEPLACEMENT ISOTOPIQUE. ON MONTRE ALORS QUE LA VARIATION BRUSQUE DE DEFORMATION CORRESPOND A UN CHANGEMENT DE L'ETAT DE PROTON QUI DECRIT L'ETAT FONDAMENTAL DES NOYAUX IMPAIRS OU QUI PARTICIPE A LA CONFIGURATION PROTON-NEUTRON DANS LES NOYAUX IMPAIRS-IMPAIRS. Book Description

Book Description
This work details an application of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy for the separation of short-lived isomeric states and their subsequent study with decay spectroscopy. It reports the successful construction of a novel decay spectroscopy apparatus that can operate at pressures below 1 x 10^-9 mbar. The method is demonstrated by separating the nuclear ground and isomeric states of 204Fr and performing alpha-decay spectroscopy. An equivalent mass spectrometer would require 4.6 million times as much resolution to achieve the same result. This work unambiguously confirms the existence of a second isomeric state in 204Fr. The author also demonstrates the effectiveness of this method for laser spectroscopy and identification of hyperfine-structure components with energy tagging. This method was successfully used in 202Fr to identify ground and isomeric states. The measurement of 202Fr reported in this thesis demonstrates a factor of 100 improvement in sensitivity compared to state-of-the-art fluorescence techniques. The work reported in this thesis won the author the IOP Nuclear Physics Group Early Career Prize.

Book Description
Whenever radioactivity is released to the atmosphere, for example by the detonation of nuclear weapons or the testing of nuclear weapons or from nuclear reactor accidents that fraction of it which remains airborne for more than a few hours is liable to be attached to aerosol particles. The resulting radioactive aerosols are carried by atmospheric mixing processes until they settle out or are scavenged by precipitation. The radiation exposure pathway of maximum concern to humans is by inhalation of aerosols and their deposition in the respiratory tract. In this context, it is important to note that radioactive aerosols are commonly of natural origin alos. In particular, the associated radionuclides can be of natural terrestrial origin, such as the decay products of radon gas, or they can e cosmogenic, such as beryllium-7. The exposure of miners of uranium and other ores and minerals to radon and its aerosol-borne decay products is of major significance. The book describes the formation of aerosols, their aerodynamic size distribution, their atmospheric residence time, their sampling and measurement, the range of radioactive aerosols found and studied thus far, including man-made nuclides and radon decay products and their interaction with man, including deposition in the lung and subsequent health effects. - Advanced level science handbook for researchers, scientists and academics - Covers all aspects of radiation exposure in humans, including subsequent health implications - Presents the latest findings and analysis in this highly topical area

Book Description
Parameters of neutron resonances are finding increasing interest, not only for scientific problems like the understanding of astrophysical processes but even more so for applications. For the construction and the safety of conventional nuclear reactors such data are essential and for new developments like the thorium-uranium cycle or for nuclear waste transmutation they are indispensible. Since the last publication of neutron resonance parameters at Landolt-Börnstein in 2004, the quality and precision of the data has been considerably improved, partly by the operation of new neutron spectrometers, e.g., the CERN time-of-flight facility recently put into operation and also by the use of new carefully designed neutron capture detectors. Volume I/24 contains neutron resonance parameters for the nuclear levels of 356 nuclei with Z ranging from 1 to 98 compiled by two eminent experts in the field. Again a considerable effort was made in comparing data from different sources in order to solve some previous discrepancies and establish 'best values', one of the main characteristics of Landoldt- Börnstein publications. In order to compare the data from different sources a comparison of the various experimental installations has been given. In view of the large amount of data the parameters for only the most important resonances are given in the printed version. However, the data for all resonances are available online at www.springerlink.com (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-540-87866-7). Neutron resonance parameters of many nuclei were previously published by Landolt-Börnstein in Volumes I/16B and I/16C.
