Le bruit ambiant est un élément que nous rencontrons quotidiennement, dans la plupart des situations de communication auxquelles nous participons. Il a naturellement un impact sur la qualité de la réception et de la compréhension des messages qui nous sont adressés. Le rapport signal/bruit est un facteur essentiel de bonne ou de mauvaise perception de la parole. En milieu scolaire, ce rapport n'atteint que 5 à 7 dB en moyenne, ce qui ne permet pas une intelligibilité maximale, que l'auditeur soit entendant ou malentendant. Nous avons souhaité concevoir un test d'évaluation de la sensibilité au rapport signal/bruit, afin d'avoir un outil de mesure clair et fiable. Il comporte deux épreuves : une épreuve d'audiométrie vocale dans le bruit pour laquelle nous avons créé une liste de 60 logatomes et un bruit de fond continu à l'aide du logiciel PRAAT ; et une épreuve de sélection de récit qui demande d'extraire une histoire parmi trois histoires lues simultanément par trois voix différentes. Nous avons proposé ce test à une population d'enfants entendants âgés de 10 à 14 ans. Nous avons obtenu une norme qui servira de référence pour une population assez large. Nous avons voulu un test qui soit simple d'utilisation, pratique et rapide dans sa passation, celle-ci n'excède pas 13 minutes. Il permettra de comparer les scores des enfants entendants entre eux, et les scores des enfants malentendants face à ceux des enfants entendants. Il mettra en évidence une grande variabilité interindividuelle et sera un élément en faveur de divers aménagements pouvant être proposés à l'enfant en difficulté (placement dans la salle de classe, port d'aides auditives numériques à hautes fréquences...).

Hearing loss is a common chronic condition which is often poorly recognized but can have multiple negative impacts, not just on the lives of those directly affected, but also those living with them. People with impaired hearing may begin a long and uncertain journey involving a number of key stages, from emerging awareness and help-seeking, to diagnosis, adjustment, and self-evaluation. Based on a model of person-centered audiological rehabilitation, this book explains why it is important to understand both patients’ own experiences, and those of their communication partners, over time. It focuses particularly on the human dynamics of hearing loss, exploring the broader consequences of hearing loss for the individual, family members, and wider society. In particular the book: gives insight into the patients' and their communication partners’ experiences and perspectives through clear and telling first-hand narrative accounts; examines how people understand their own hearing loss, reflect on their experiences with hearing aids – both positive and negative – and evaluate treatment options; considers the changes needed to conversations in order to include all communication partners, whether with impaired hearing or not; and discusses consequences of hearing loss using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).
