Need for the improvement in wheat yield is increasing continuously due to day by day increase in human population on the same land. This challenge is much greater in the developing countries than the developed world. Many breeding programs are based on selection of desirable parents for hybridization that's the main source to create genetic variation which is heritable to offspring. This study was carried out to have information on the magnitude of heritability and genetic advance of various important wheat parameters as it plays an important role for planning breeding strategy. For this purpose second filial (F2) generation of ten cross combinations involving seven wheat varieties/genotypes were studied. These were planted in field in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. At maturity 200 plants from each cross and 20 plants from each parent were taken and data were recorded. The information derived will be very helpful to make improvement in wheat yield through reliable selection as it is suggested that varieties/genotypes showing good results should be given due importance in future breeding programs.

"Inheritance mechanisms for fifteen plant characters of wheat (Triticum durum) Desf. were studied in the F2, F3, and F4 generations in four crosses derived from four parents grown in Jubeiha, University of Jordan Campus during 1984 and 1985 seasons. The parents are Hourani, Mexicali 75, Yamuna, and Njoro 227. Phenotypic associations between grain yield and its components were high, while the morpho-physiological traits have poor positive association with grain yield and its components. Estimates of broad sense heritability indicated low to high values for all traits except number of spikelets/spike, spike length, and flag leaf area which showed low to medium values. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance for some characters such as total seed number/plant, plant height, and main spike seed number and weight indicated that selection for these traits will be valuable. Some characters showed high values for additive gene action in some crosses which mean that selection for these characters could be practiced in early generation. In Hourani x Mexicali 75 cross, heritability values were high in most of the characters. This cross also showed strong association between grain yield and other characters."--Page iv.

The properties of continuous variation are basic to the theory of evolution and to the practice of plant and animal improvement. Yet the genetical study of continuous variation has lagged far behind that of discontinuous variation. The reason for this situation is basically methodological. Mendel gave us not merely his principles of heredity, but also a method of experiment by which these principles could be tested over a wider range of living species, and extended into the elaborate genetical theory of today. The power of this tool is well attested by the speed with which genetics has grown. In less than fifty years, it has not only developed a theoretical structure which is unique in the biological sciences, but has established a union with nuclear cytology so close that the two have become virtually a single science offering us a new approach to problems so diverse as those of evolution, development, disease, cellular chemistry and human welfare. Much of this progress would have been impossible and all would have been slower without the Mendelian method of recognizing and using unit differences in the genetic materials.
