The most effective way to generate an estimate of a new product’s cost engineering change cost, or innovation cost is through a detailed cost investigation. Now in its third edition, Realistic Cost Estimating for Manufacturing has been used by students and practitioners since 1968 in this endeavor. Revised and expanded, the book recognizes the extremely important role estimating is playing in today’s highly competitive global economy. Realistic Cost Estimating for Manufacturing provides a survey of the myriad manufacturing processes and practices and combines this with in-depth explanations and examples of costing methods and tools. A comprehensive, standardized approach to their application is given. Among the manufacturing processes surveyed are: machining, casting, stamping, forging, welding, plastics technology, finishing, and rapid prototyping. To develop realistic baseline estimates, an engineering or costing professional must have an in-depth understanding of costing methods and techniques. As a fundamental reference, the book provides insight into the art, science, and functions of cost estimation in a wide range of activities: product design and manufacturing, engineering change control, proposal development, make or buy studies, identifying cost reduction opportunities, component costing, reverse engineering, benchmarking, and examining alternative processes, materials, machines, and tooling. As examples, it will aid the practitioner in efforts to justify the replacement or improvement of existing technology with new creative solutions; perform a feasibility study; develop a basis for cost-oriented decision support; improve supply chain evaluation and sourcing analysis; and minimize costs. The third edition has been greatly enhanced with new chapters and material dedicated to the roles of economics and finance, cost reduction, continuous improvement, plastic parts, electronics cost estimating, costing studies, advanced manufacturing processes, and quality costs. Further, the existing chapters have been significantly expanded to include new processes and operations and examples to enhance learning. Since nontraditional technology is widely applied in manufacturing, its costing aspects are also explored. Five Appendices provide additional information on productivity based on efficiency, cost reduction, matching part features to manufacturing processes, packaging cost, and inspection and measurement costs. As with its previous editions, instructors of cost estimating courses can rely on the book to provide a solid foundation for manufacturing engineering courses and programs of study. The book is also useful for on-the-job training courses for engineers, managers, estimators, designers, and practitioners. De-industrialization, accelerated by the financial crisis, is a long term process. The comparative advantage of emerging economies shifted towards more advanced goods and their growing populations commanded an increasing share in global demand. This shift towards a factory-free economy in high income countries has drawn the attention of policy makers in North America and Europe. Some politicians have articulated alarming views, initiating mercantilist or 'beggar-thy-neighbour' cost-competitiveness policies. Yet companies that concentrate research and design innovations at home but no longer have any factories there may be the norm in the future. This volume proposes an economic analysis of this phenomenon and includes 11 contributions which complement each other and tackle the problem from different angles. The evidence in this book suggests that de-industrialization is a process that happens over time in all countries, even China. One implication is that criticism of China is not likely to provide a solution to these long term trends. Another implication is that the distinction between manufacturing and services is likely to become increasingly blurry. More manufacturing firms are engaging in services activities, and more wholesale firms are engaging in manufacturing. One optimistic perspective suggests that industrial country firms may be able to exploit the high-value added and skill-intensive activities associated with design and innovation, as well as distribution, which are all components of the global value chain for manufacturing. Although this ongoing transformation of the industrial economies may be consistent with evolving comparative advantage, it has significant short-run costs and requires far-sighted investments. These include the costs to workers who are caught in the shift from an industrial to a service economy, and the need to invest in new infrastructure and education to prepare coming generations for their changing roles.

The International Conference on Production Research has a good tradition: The fIrst Conference was held in Birmingham 1971 with 61 participants. With respect to the decision that the Conference should be held every second year, by this time the Conference has been held in the following countries: Birmingham (1971, UK), Copenhagen (1973, Denmark), Amhurst (1975, USA), Tokyo (1977, Japan), Amsterdam (1979, The Netherlands), Novi Sad (1981, Yugoslavia), Windsor (1983, Canada), Stuttgart (1985, Germany), and the next Conference will take place in Cincinnatti (1987, USA). The number of submitted abstracts and papers was continuously increas ing such that the Programme Committee of this actual 8th Conference on Production Research has been forced to introduce a further refereeing procedure. Each submitted abstract was presented to at least two referees. This resulted not only in a reduction of the number of presented full papers and poster contributions but, as the Programme Committee and the Editiors hope, it led also to a considerable increase in the scientifIc quality of this 8th International Conference on Production Research. The preceeding conference in Windsor, Canada, was dedicated to the topic: Production Research as a Means of Productivity Improvement. We don't believe that this statement has become untrue in the meanwhile.
