Book Description
Excerpt from Aids to Tropical Medicine The number of openings for medical men in the tropical portions of our Empire, the admission of cases of tropical disease by the agency of our increasing commerce, and the recognition of grave colonial and international sanitary questions, have all served to give an impetus to the study of tropical diseases at home. The concrete results of this impetus have been manifested by the establishment of Schools of Tropical Medicine both in London and at Liverpool, as well as by the institution of Diplomas in Tropical Medicine to be conferred after due examination by several examining Boards. The present small volume does not in any way aim at providing a text-book on the subject, but is rather intended to form a students note-book, in which a concise and up-to-date summary of the chief points may be found. To attain this object, everything not deemed essential has been omitted, and theoretical considerations have been excluded as much as possible. For convenience of reference the arrangement of subject-matter is strictly alphabetical throughout. Some of the results of the Royal Society Commission on Malta fever have been incorporated. Book Description
Excerpt from Tropical Medicine: With Special Reference to the West Indies, Central America, Hawaii and the Philippines, Including a General Consideration of Tropical Hygiene The purposes, scope and plan of the work are set forth in the Introduction. Each day the claims of Tropical Medicine upon American interest are more freely admitted by the medical profession and although we have no established school for the exclusive training of men in tropical pathology and hygiene, as yet, the necessity for such an institution is widely conceded and doubtless will be properly met in due time. Certain of the larger medical colleges have already established lectureships and courses of instruction for senior and advanced students and it is pleasant to think that the men who now go forth from these institutions, some of them to practice our profession in the extended tropical possessions of the United States, will have a conception of exotic diseases and pathology, which will guide them into paths of use ful and satisfying work. Book Description
Excerpt from Tropical Diseases A manual on the diseases of warm climates, of handy size, and yet giving adequate information, has long been a want; for the exigencies of travel and of tropical life are, as a rule, incompatible with big volumes and large libraries. This is the reason for the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Diagnostics and Treatment of Tropical Diseases As the second edition of this book came out less than a year ago, when a very thorough revision was made, there has not seemed a need for material changes in this edition. As our knowledge of trench fever has made such progress in the past year this subject had been rewritten. A number of changes have been made in paragraphs of various sections and two new illustrations and a plate of the malarial parasites have been added. Book Description
Excerpt from Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 1 of 3 Owing to the recent advances in the knowledge of the etiology of many tropical diseases the subject of their prophylaxis is a very promising one, since the general principles on which efficient and economical preventive measures should be based are now well understood. In the application Of such general principles local conditions must be carefully considered, and thus in describing the various methods to be adopted those suitable for certain localities have been given as types. In the spread of many tropical diseases intermediate hosts play an important part, and the life-history of such hosts, Often insects, has been considered at some length, as a knowledge of this subject is essential to the proper understanding of the rationale Of the preventive measures proposed. An attempt has been made to group the diseases treated of according to their known or probable causation. Thus, in the first part those diseases are dealt with which, like Malaria, are known to be due to Protozoa, and others, such as Yellow Fever, which are probably due to such Organisms. In the second part diseases due to the higher forms Of animal life are considered. The third part is devoted to bacterial diseases, to the effects Of certain animal and vegetable poisons, and to certain diseases the causation of which is unknown or but imperfectly understood. The advantages Of this arrangement are considerable, as the general outline Of the prophylactic measures required differs for the diseases described in each part.
