Author: Prasanta K. Pattanaik
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 404
Book Description
These essays by eminent economist Prasanta K. Pattanaik deal with two distinct areas. (i) the theory of decision making by individuals; and (ii) welfare economics and the theory of social choice. The papers in the first group are all concerned with situations outside the conventional frameworks of rational choice under perfect certainty and uncertainty. Essays in the second group are concerned with the classical problem of aggregation of preferences and welfare judgments. Some deal with the formal modeling of individual rights, and the measurement of freedom - concluding with measurement of living standards. The volume will be useful to researchers and students of welfare economics. Besides economists, students and teachers of psychology, political science, and philosophy will also find them of interest.

Collective Choice and Social Welfare
Author: Amartya Sen
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674919211
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 641
Book Description
Originally published in 1970, this classic study has been recognized for its groundbreaking role in integrating economics and ethics, and for its influence in opening up new areas of research in social choice, including aggregative assessment. It has also had a large influence on international organizations, including the United Nations, notably in its work on human development. The book showed that the “impossibility theorems” in social choice theory—led by the pioneering work of Kenneth Arrow—do not negate the possibility of reasoned and democratic social choice. Sen’s ideas about social choice, welfare economics, inequality, poverty, and human rights have continued to evolve since the book’s first appearance. This expanded edition preserves the text of the original while presenting eleven new chapters of fresh arguments and results. “Expanding on the early work of Condorcet, Pareto, Arrow, and others, Sen provides rigorous mathematical argumentation on the merits of voting mechanisms...For those with graduate training, it will serve as a frequently consulted reference and a necessity on one’s book shelf.” —J. F. O’Connell, Choice

Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
Arrow takes up the basic question of whether collective choices can reflect individual preferences. The seminal 1950 paper that opens the volume shows that given reasonable conditions that social choices must satisfy to reflect individual preferences, it is impossible to make a choice among alternatives without violating some of the conditions.

Essays on Ethics, Social Behaviour, and Scientific Explanation
Author: J.C. Harsanyi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940109327X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
When John Harsanyi came to Stanford University as a candidate for the Ph.D., I asked him why he was bothering, since it was most un likely that he had anything to learn from us. He was already a known scho lar; in addition to some papers in economics, the first two papers in this vol ume had already been published and had dazzled me by their originality and their combination of philosophical insight and technical competence. However, I am very glad I did not discourage him; whether he learned any thing worthwhile I don't know, but we all learned much from him on the foundations of the theory of games and specifically on the outcome of bar gaining. The central focus of Harsanyi's work has continued to be in the theory of games, but especially on the foundations and conceptual problems. The theory of games, properly understood, is a very broad approach to social interaction based on individually rational behavior, and it connects closely with fundamental methodological and substantive issues in social science and in ethics. An indication of the range of Harsanyi's interest in game the ory can be found in the first paper of Part B -though in fact his owncontri butions are much broader-and in the second paper the applications to the methodology of social science. The remaining papers in that section show more specifically the richness of game theory in specific applications.

Introduction to Formal Philosophy
Author: Sven Ove Hansson
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319774344
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 727
Book Description
This Undergraduate Textbook introduces key methods and examines the major areas of philosophy in which formal methods play pivotal roles. Coverage begins with a thorough introduction to formalization and to the advantages and pitfalls of formal methods in philosophy. The ensuing chapters show how to use formal methods in a wide range of areas. Throughout, the contributors clarify the relationships and interdependencies between formal and informal notions and constructions. Their main focus is to show how formal treatments of philosophical problems may help us understand them better. Formal methods can be used to solve problems but also to express new philosophical problems that would never have seen the light of day without the expressive power of the formal apparatus. Formal philosophy merges work in different areas of philosophy as well as logic, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, physics, psychology, biology, economics, political theory, and sociology. This title offers an accessible introduction to this new interdisciplinary research area to a wide academic audience.
