The first extended Lacanian reading of J. L. Austin's ordinary language philosophy, this book examines how it has been received in the continental tradition by Jacques Derrida and Judith Butler, Jacques Rancière and Oswald Ducrot. This is a tradition that neglects Austin's general speech act theory on behalf of his special theory of the performative, whilst bringing a new attention to the literary and the aesthetic. The book charts each of these theoretical interactions with a Lacanian reading of the thinker through a case study. Austin, Derrida and Butler are respectively read with a Hollywood blockbuster, a Shakespearean bestseller and a globally influential May '68 poster – texts preoccupied with the problem of subjectivity in early, high and postmodernity. Hence Austin's constatives (nonperformative statements) are explored with Dead Poets Society; Derridean naming with Romeo and Juliet; and Butlerian aesthetic re-enactment with We Are all German Jews. Finally, Rancière and Ducrot enable a return to Austin beyond his continental reception. Austin is valorised with a theory as attractive, and as irreducible, to the continental tradition as his own thought, namely Jacques Lacan's theory of the signifier. Drawing together some of the giants of language theory, psychoanalysis and poststructuralist thought, Habjan offers a new materialist reading of the 'ordinary' status of literary language and a vital contribution to current debates within literary studies and contemporary philosophy.

Mountain Troops And Medics is a complete World War II Combat History of the U.S. Tenth Mountain Division written by Albert H. Meinke, Jr., M.D., who served as one of its front line infantry battalion surgeons during all of the division's combat in 1944-45. The Tenth Mountain Division was a very special Army division made up of carefully selected skiers, mountaineers, and experienced outdoorsmen. Known as the "SKI TROOPS," these men trained long and hard to fight on skis and snowshoes, and to survive in below zero temperatures in mountainous terrain so hostile to military maneuvering that it was necessary to use pack mules to transport supplies, ammunition and equipment. During the winter of 1944-45 this division entered the military stalemate in the Apennine Mountains in Northern Italy, and on its first offensive cracked the German defenses to take Riva Ridge and the key mountain peaks, Monte Belvedere, Monte Gorgolesco and Monte della Torraccia. It was the first Allied division to break into the Po Valley, and first to reach and cross the wide Po River, using hastily obtained, hand-paddled assault boats. It then continued its rapid advance, as the vanguard of the Allied Armies in Italy, until it reached the Austrian border. The author not only served with the first of this division's combat troops to leave the continental United States and participated in all of the Division's major battles, but also served in every one of its special task forces deep behind enemy lines. Most of the time he was well informed about local military strategies and Division objectives. Drama, excitement, tragedy and humor are included in these stories of preparations for combat, unusual fighting conditions, care of wounded soldiers at the front, and wartime conditions in Italy. In this book the survivors of one of the worst cases of friendly fire in World War 2 tell their story. On 28 January 1944 twenty-seven B-26 bombers from 441, 442, 443 and 444 squadrons, 320 Bomb Group, United States Army Air Force, bombed a bridge over the river Paglia at Allerona to the north of Orvieto, Italy. At the time a Prisoner of War train carrying Allied servicemen from PG Camp 54 Fara in Sabina to Germany was crossing the bridge. The exact composition of the train, and the number of persons aboard, is still open to conjecture: the majority of the card-indices and transfer documents were destroyed with the train. The British authorities learned about what happened through the interception of German communications, and on 14 February British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, in passing on the information to President Roosvelt via a special ULTRA message, was insistent that the bombing should remain top secret as a leak would point directly to British control of the German code.
