Pour améliorer les conditions de la mise en oeuvre d'un brevet relatif à l'épuration des lixiviats de décharge par les mâchefers d'incinération d'ordures ménagères (Mia1). des études de laboratoire. ayant pour but de mettre en évidence les propriétés des MIOM ont été réalisées avec des solutions contenant des polluants plus ou moins bien identifiés (phénol. rouge Congo. Lixiviats...). Toul d'abord, des éludes en flacons fermés, consacrées aux propriétés d'adsorption des MIOM, ont montré que : - les isothermes d'adsorption s'apparentent étroitement à l'isotherme de FREUNDLICH; - l'adsorption en deux étapes mobilise vraisemblablement des sites de types différents ; la première étape correspond apparemment à une adsorption préliminaire très rapide d'une quantité de polluant qu'il est commode d'assimiler pour décrire de manière ultérieure la seconde étape, à une concentration initiale non nulle en phase solide. Ensuite, les effets épurateurs des MIOM secs sur des polluants considérés ont été étudiés dans des colonnes en écoulement continu afin de se rapprocher plus nettement des conditions observées en vrai grandeur lorsqu'on déverse des lixiviats de décharge sur un tas de mâchefers. Toutes proportions gardées, en raison de la relativement faible capacité d'adsorption du matériau. il a fallu en particulier examiner attentivement les questions posées par le "mouillage" de la colonne au cours duquel une fraction importante de la capacité est mobilisée. Enfin. en utilisant les isothermes et les cinétiques d'adsorption. nous avons tenté de modéliser la percolation de polluants divers sur MIOM, matériau hétérogène par excellence. En faisant appel de manière justifiée à la notion d'Intervalle de confiance. classique en statistique mathématique. nous avons pu finalement obtenir dans tous les cas. Au prix de l'ajustement de certains paramètres, des profils de concentrations calculées en sortie de colonne, peu éloignés des profils expérimentaux. De tels résultats laissent bien augurer de la poursuite de recherches analogues ayant trait à la pollution des sols par les lixiviats de décharge.
