Book Description
This publication presents the findings of a survey, carried out in 2005 by a UNEP team of eight experts, to investigate and assess environmental risks or pollution in the Gaza Strip, focusing on the 21 disengaged Israeli settlements and the Erez industrial site. Using satellite imagery and reports, about 100 areas of interest were identified including, industrial buildings, waste disposal sites, agricultural plants and storage tanks. Overall, the report found that the environmental impact of the former Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip was limited, with the main concern being the amount of remaining asbestos in the rubble of demolished houses. Once the rubble is removed, asbestos disposed of in a safe manner and the identified areas of contamination are cleaned up, there will be no environmental constraints to human settlement in these areas.

Book Description
Prepared at the request of the Palestinian Authority and with the cooperation of the Israeli government, the aim of this Assessment is to provide a snapshot of the environmental conditions in the former settlement areas, and to identify any areas of immediate concern before resettlement and new construction takes place. Using satellite imagery, earlier reports and feedback from Palestinian, Israeli and international sources prior to the disengagement, scientists identified approximately 100 areas of interest including industrial buildings, waste disposal sites, agricultural plants and storage tanks.--Publisher's description.

Book Description
When a country emerges from violent conflict, the management of the environment and natural resources has important implications for short-term peacebuilding and long-term stability, particularly if natural resources were a factor in the conflict, play a major role in the national economy, or broadly support livelihoods. Only recently, however, have the assessment, harnessing, and restoration of the natural resource base become essential components of postconflict peacebuilding. This book, by thirty-five authors, examines the experiences of more than twenty countries and territories in assessing post-conflict environmental damage and natural resource degradation and their implications for human health, livelihoods, and security. The book also illustrates how an understanding of both the risks and opportunities associated with natural resources can help decision makers manage natural resources in ways that create jobs, sustain livelihoods, and contribute to economic recovery and reconciliation, without creating new grievances or significant environmental degradation. Finally, the book offers lessons from the remediation of environmental hot spots, restoration of damaged ecosystems, and reconstruction of the environmental services and infrastructure necessary for a sustainable peace. Assessing and Restoring Natural Resources in Post-Conflict Peacebuilding is part of a global initiative to identify and analyze lessons in post-conflict peacebuilding and natural resource management. The project has generated six books of case studies and analyses, with contributions by practitioners, policy makers, and researchers. Other books address highvalue resources, land, water, livelihoods, and governance.

Book Description
This book provides a detailed overview of the concepts, techniques, applications, and methodological approaches involved in land use and cover change (LUCC) modeling, also known simply as land change modeling. More than 40 international experts in this field have participated in this book, which illustrates recent advances in LUCC modeling with examples from North and South America, the Middle East, and Europe. Given the broad range of geomatic approaches available, it helps readers select the approach that best meets their needs. The book is structured into five parts preceded by a foreword written by Roger White and a general introduction. Part I consists of four chapters, each of which focuses on a specific stage in the modeling process: calibration, simulation, validation, and scenarios. It presents and explains the fundamental ideas and concepts underlying LUCC modeling. This is complemented by a comparative analysis of the selected software packages, practically applied in various case studies in Part II and Part III. Part II discusses recently proposed methodological developments that have enhanced modeling procedures and results while Part III offers case studies as well as interesting, innovative methodological proposals. Part IV revises different fundamental techniques used in LUCC modeling and finally Part V describes the best-known software packages used in the applications presented in Parts II and III.
