This report presents results of the latest coho smelt enumeration and coded-wire tagged at Black Creek, French Creek, and the Trent River, on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The objectives of the program were to: describe the size, and age distributions of the outmigration from each system; determine the contributions of outplanted (hatchery origin) coho to the smolt runs in French Creek and Trent River; and obtain results required to examine the relationships between physical environmental factors and smolt migration; smolt migration timing and size and subsequent oceanic harvest distribution; and adult escapement and smolt production. Methodology is included, as well as results and discussion.

Management of British Columbia's salmon fishery is hampered by a lack of accurate, long-term information on smolt production, catch distribution and escapement returns for individual stocks. This is especially true for coho salmon. Because it is not practical to monitor the smolt production and escapements of many small coho-producing streams, streams are monitored that are representative of others in the same geographical area. Black Creek has been designated as a key stream for wild coho salmon populations on the east coast of Vancouver Island. This report summarizes studies conducted on Black Creek between 1978 and 1980 when 2 smolt runs were enumerated and tagged with coded-wire nose tags (1978 and 1979) and 3 escapement runs were enumerated (1978, 1979, and 1980) to evaluate the productivity and contribution of wild stocks prior to major fish production facilities being established as fisheries enhancement efforts.
