Book Description
This book looks at a cohort of poets who studied at University College Cork during the 1970s and early 1980s. Based on extensive interviews and archival work, the book examines the notion that the poets form a “generation” in sociological terms. It proposes an analysis of the work of the poets, studying the thematics and preoccupations that shape their oeuvre. Among the poets that figure in the book are Greg Delanty, Theo Dorgan, Seán Dunne, Gerry Murphy, Thomas McCarthy, Gregory O’Donoghue, and Maurice Riordan. The volume is prefaced by Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin.

Derek Mahon: A Retrospective
Author: Nicholas Grene
Publisher: Liverpool University Press
ISBN: 1835538258
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
Derek Mahon (1941–2020) is widely recognized as one of the most important Irish poets of his generation. This collection of new critical essays offers an important retrospective assessment of the nature of his poetic achievement. Bringing together many leading scholars of modern and contemporary Irish poetry, including a notable number of accomplished poet-critics, its contributors range widely across Mahon’s body of work. Their essays offer fresh considerations of the biographical, geographical and literary contexts that shaped his poetic voice. This includes paying attention not only to more familiar influences but also to previously little considered interlocutors. The stylistic and formal achievement of his voice is re-evaluated in ways that range from attentive close readings to considerations of his controversial practice of self-revision, and his engagements with music and experiments in translation. The politics of a poet often misleadingly considered apolitical are also reframed to take in the engagements of his early work through to the ecocritical commitment of his later poetry. Indeed, a notable aspect of this book is the consideration it gives to all the phases of Mahon’s career. As a whole, the collection opens up many new ways of reading and understanding Mahon’s important body of work.

The Poetic Economists of England and Ireland 1912-2000
Author: D. Johnston
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230511015
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
Although modern English and Irish poetry arises from the different cultures of the two countries these poets have shared - throughout this century - the same editors and publishers, competed for the same prizes, and been judged, ostensibly, by the same standards. This book examines contexts for these exchanges over four decades - tracing the lineages of Yeats and Hardy from their meeting in 1912 through WWI, the 30s, the 60s, and the 90s, - to see what influences and ideas are exchanged and how poetic value accrues.

Book Description
Jawdat R. Haydar (1905–2006) was a prominent Lebanese poet from Baalbek, who contributed to world literature in the English language, and was the author of several books of poetry, including Voices (1980), Echoes (1989), and Shadows (1998). It will appeal to both an academic and non-academic readership interested in the field of 20th century English-language world literature. It will also be of use to those specialising in the comparative literature of the Middle East and the literary history of Anglo-Arabic influences in terms of the English poetical movements of Romanticism and Modernism and their reception in the Anglophone literary circles of the Arab world. Also included is a valuable appendix of digitised images containing a selection of Jawdat Haydar’s handwritten poems from the collection of archived papers held at the Jawdat R. Haydar Memorial Study Room in the Riyad Nassar Library at the Lebanese American University, Beirut. Valuable for scholars and of interest to the general reader alike, it is the first time digitised images of Haydar’s handwritten poems have ever been published.
