Interpreting the English Village
Author: Mick Aston
Publisher: Windgather Press
ISBN: 1909686069
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 657
Book Description
An original and approachable account of how archaeology can tell the story of the English village. Shapwick lies in the middle of Somerset, next to the important monastic centre of Glastonbury: the abbey owned the manor for 800 years from the 8th to the 16th century and its abbots and officials had a great influence on the lives of the peasants who lived there. It is possible that abbot Dunstan, one of the great reformers of tenth century monasticism directed the planning of the village. The Shapwick Project examined the development and history of an English parish and village over a ten thousand-year period. This was a truly multi-disciplinary project. Not only were a battery of archaeological and historical techniques explored - such as field walking, test-pitting, archaeological excavation, aerial reconnaissance, documentary research and cartographic analysis - but numerous other techniques such as building analysis, dendrochronological dating and soil analysis were undertaken on a large scale. The result is a fascinating study about how the community lived and prospered in Shapwick. In addition we learn how a group of enthusiastic and dedicated scholars unravelled this story. As such there is much here to inspire and enthuse others who might want to embark on a landscape study of a parish or village area. Seven of the ten chapters begin with a fictional vignette to bring the story of the village to life. Text-boxes elucidate re-occurring themes and techniques. Extensively illustrated in colour including 100 full page images.

Author: Christina Gitsaki
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443806447
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 405
Book Description
The emergence of globalisation is bringing massive changes to all aspects of life, including language. In an effort to raise awareness on the effects of globalisation on language learning and teaching, the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) devoted its 31st Annual Congress to this theme. This volume represents a collection of papers by academics in Australia, South-East Asia, New Zealand, Europe and North America, which synthesize language learning and teaching theories and current research to present the views of applied linguists and language educators on a variety of issues with regards to the tensions that globalisation and internationalisation bring on language and languages. A total of twenty-two articles discuss issues related to the status of the ELT profession in a globalised world, issues of ESL teaching and language assessment, the ever increasing use of ICTs for foreign language learning, and the effects of globalisation on minority languages. This collection of articles attempts to integrate theoretical issues, research findings, and practical applications on different aspects of TESOL to provide academics, researchers, students and language educators with a discussion of the current state of affairs in the field of applied linguistics with regards to globalisation.

Exploring Language in a Multilingual Context
Author: Bettina Migge
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521195551
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 373
Book Description
Proposing a new methodological approach to documenting languages spoken in multilingual societies, this book retraces the investigation of one unique linguistic space, the Creole varieties referred to as Takitaki in multilingual French Guiana. It illustrates how interactional sociolinguistic, anthropological linguistic, discourse analytical and quantitative sociolinguistic approaches can be integrated with structural approaches to language in order to resolve rarely discussed questions systematically (what are the outlines of the community, who is a rightful speaker, what speech should be documented) that frequently crop up in projects of language documentation in multilingual contexts. The authors argue that comprehensively documenting complex linguistic phenomena requires taking into account the views of all local social actors (native and non native speakers, institutions, linguists, non-speakers etc.), applying a range of complementary data collection and analysis methods and putting issues of ideology, variation, language contact and interaction centre stage. This book will be welcomed by researchers in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, fieldwork studies, language documentation and language variation and change.
