Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive commentary and guidance to readers on the current edition (1999 Edition) of General Conditions of Contract for Civil Engineering Works (the "General Conditions"), which the Hong Kong Government uses for all its civil engineering contracts. The book describes 46 out of 90 clauses in the General Conditions and their practical application, with explanations in plain and simple language under such headings as Commentary, Analysis and Application. The listing of equivalent clauses of the more user-friendly English ICE Conditions and the international FIDIC Conditions together enables the readers to understand the meaning of the General Conditions from a different context. For those readers who find it easier to read in Chinese, the translation will help them to compare with and understand the original English text. The book is therefore useful to students, consulting engineers, surveyors and lawyers who want to understand more about the Hong Kong construction practice.

Book Description
The book highlights and analyses the distress to buildings caused by sulphate-induced heave, with particular reference to the recent problems in the Dublin area of Ireland. It describes the formation of pyrite, the processes involved in its oxidation and the various ways in which consequential expansion takes place. For the first time in the literature it discusses the way that buildings can be raised above their supporting foundation walls by the expansion of pyritiferous fill which has been used beneath ground-bearing floor slabs in Ireland. The significance of fractures through the iron sulphide microcrystals for the rate and extent of oxidation is discussed. Photographs and profiles of sulphate ingress into concrete/concrete blocks are presented. Case histories from the UK, North America and Ireland are discussed.

Book Description
Combining in-depth research with first-hand interviews of key participants in the project, Thayer engagingly recounts an important aspect of America's race to develop atomic weapons. He describes the organization and management methods behind one of the major engineering achievements of the 20th century--the design and construction of the original plutonium-production plant at Hanford, Washington. Hanford's extraordinarily short and successful development is described and placed in the context of the contemporaneous crisis conditions: fear, urgency, and daunting uncertainties in science, engineering, procurement, and construction. The efforts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, DuPont, and the Metallurgical Laboratory are described in depth, in addition to detailed discussions of the desperate nature of the crisis, labor conditions, technologies, and intangibles of those wartime years. Thayer pinpoints 38 principal reasons for Hanford's success; describes what the engineers, builders, and operators actually did; and presents figures and tables to illustrate the severely time-constrained problems of parallel development. About the Author Harry Thayer has participated in the design of more than 70 industrial plants over a career of more than 40 years.

Book Description
Nine engineering problems and their ingenious solutions. How do you land a rover on Mars, resolve a perpetual traffic jam or save a herd of caribou from potential extinction? Ask an engineer! Here are nine real-life problems for which engineers designed inventive (and even crazy!) solutions. Each was solved using a different field of engineering „ from aerospace and mechanical to the new field of geomatics „ along with some awesome math, science and technology skills! A helpful seven-step engineering design process is also featured: define the problem, identify the requirements, develop solutions, design a prototype, test it, improve it and share the idea. What child doesnÍt love a radical idea? These feats are sure to inspire the natural engineer in all!
