Book Description
Due to liability issues, landfills are no longer considered the best method of waste disposal. Innovative, safe disposal methods for large quantities of contaminated soils and waste are sought by engineers. In urban or industrial areas with most of the contamination, it has become very attractive to engineer contaminated soils and waste by physical or chemical methods and reuse them as construction materials. This proceedings addresses the following: the creation of useful products from contaminated soils and waste; changes in soil or waste properties after processing; logistics of the operations; and the regulatory issues associated with such usage. While alternative methods of disposal are being utilized, civil engineers are still involved in the development of large containment systems and must continue to increase their knowledge of these systems. Solid-waste landfills are made of multi-layered soil and geosynthetic liner systems underlying the fills and providing surface coverage. to a large degree by the shear strengths developed at interfaces between the soils and the geosynthetics forming part of either the liner or the cover systems. In this proceedings, recent research efforts to measure the interface strength between geomembranes and soils are presented.

History of Progress
Author: W. Allen Marr
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475263
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 2392
Book Description
Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE This collection of 78 historical papers provides a wide view of the rich body of literature that documents the development of fundamental concepts geotechnical engineering and their application to practical problems. From the highly theoretical to the elegantly practical, the papers in this one-of-a-kind collection are significant for their contributions to the geotechnical engineering literature. Among the writings of more than 60 geotechnical engineering pioneers are several by Karl Terzaghi, widely known as the father of soil mechanics, R.R. Proctor, Arthur Casagrande, and Ralph Peck. Many of these papers contain information as useful today as when they were first written. Others provide great insight into the origins and development of the field and the thought processes of its leaders.

Degradation of Natural Building Stone
Author: J. F. Labuz
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 162
Book Description
Proceedings of 2 sessions sponsored by the Rock Mechanics Committee of The Geo-Institute of the ASCE, Minneapolis, MN, October 5-8 1997. Buildings and historical monuments composed of natural stone are subjected through time to mechanical loads, temperature variations, and chemical attack, which may lead to degradation of the material. Degradation is manifested by damage in the form of microcracks. The papers in this proceedings discuss quality assessment of natural stone and damage diagnosis as the first stage of planning remedial action for restoration. Emphasis is placed on case histories and successful experimental procedures for the various disciplines working in the area of stone degradation. Covered are efficient, economic, and safe restoration and preservation policies, in addition to procedures related to new construction. Topics include modem dimension stone quarrying and fabrication technologies mechanical characterization of natural building stone constitutive models for stone deterioration natural stone described as a microcracked solid laboratory evaluation of building stone weathering assuring the durability of stone facades in new construction
