A vast majority of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN)children live in communities with alarmingly high rates of poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, and victimization. Domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse are widespread. In 2013 the Attorney General tasked this Advisory Committee with examining these issues and making recommendations for change that will heal and protect AI/AN children and foster environments in which they can thrive and develop to their full potential. This report presents the Advisory Committee's policy recommendations that are intended to serve as a blueprint for preventing AI/AN children's exposure to violence and for mitigating the negative effects they experience. The report's primary focus is the 31 findings and recommendations that emerged from hearings and Listening Sessions. It also incorporates some of the recommendations from previous reports that most strongly impact AI/AN children exposed to violence. This is a print on demand report.

This book continues the themes addressed by its two predecessors in this mini-series by examining the role of the principle of the welfare interests of the child in the law of the U.S. and Canada. It provides a record of the key milestones in its development in each country and conducts a comparative analysis of the contemporary law relating to children in both. Teaching with Tension is a collection of seventeen original essays that address the extent to which attitudes about race, impacted by the current political moment in the United States, have produced pedagogical challenges for professors in the humanities. As a flashpoint, this current political moment is defined by the visibility of the country's first black president, the election of his successor, whose presidency has been associated with an increased visibility of the alt-right, and the emergence of the neoliberal university. Together these social currents shape the tensions with which we teach. Drawing together personal reflection, pedagogical strategies, and critical theory, Teaching with Tension offers concrete examinations that will foster student learning. The essays are organized into three thematic sections: "Teaching in Times and Places of Struggle" examines the dynamics of teaching race during the current moment, marked by neoconservative politics and twenty-first century freedom struggles.
