Book Description
The Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization (EPLBHC) is a multivolume encyclopaedic lexicon aiming to cover the whole of Byzantine prosopography for the period c. 300 to c. 1500 CE by an estimated 7000 entries on the chief personalities, families and dynasties that gave the Byzantine Empire its profile. The Lexicon makes available in an accessible way a vast array of subjects, so that the real themes of Byzantine history can shine through. It aims to spell out for ready consultation, with detailed bibliographies of sources and secondary works, what it takes to be conversant with Byzantine history and civilization. The Lexicon consists of a collaborative international project. It will consist of eight volumes of approx. 470 pages each. The publication programme commenced in December 2007 with volume I (Aaron-Azarethes) and continued in 2009 with volume II (Baanes-Eznik of Kolb). This third volume covers Facundus of Hermiane to Juvenal of Jerusalem. The rest of the Lexicon is expected to appear in four more volumes. An eighth volume will contain the general bibliography, a cumulative index and eventual addenda et corrigenda.

Book Description
The idea of publishing an extensive Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization (EPLBHC) was conceived in Greece, where - with Alexios Savvides as founding editor - the first volume of the Greek EPLBHC was prepared and eventually appeared in 1996. Six volumes have been published so far, the last two (V-VI) in early summer 2006, covering letters alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon, but obviously not including C, which in Greek is divided to a large extent under K (kappa) and to a lesser extent under ? (khi). On the other hand, the gamma entries will appear under G in the English edition. Volumes I to IV of the Greek edition (1996-2002), accompanied by a separate bibliographical volume on secondary works reaching the year 1998 (2000), have been extensively cited both in lengthy reviews and footnote references. Thus, it was recently decided to continue the project on a much larger scale and to launch it in English, in this way opening it to a much wider reading public. The Greek project will continue, as well, with each project complementing the other.

Book Description
The Parthians are a fascinating but little-known ancient civilization. In the mid-third century BCE a bold and ambitious leader called Arshak challenged Hellenic rule and led his armies to victory. The dynasty which he founded ruled over what became a mighty empire and restored the glory of Iran following the region's conquest by Alexander the Great. This imperial eastern superpower, which lasted for 400 years and stretched from the Hindu Kush to Mesopotamia, withstand the might of Rome for centuries. The Parthians were nomadic horse-warriors who left few written records, concentrating rather on a rich oral and storytelling tradition. What knowledge we have of this remarkable people derives primarily from their coinage, which mixed Hellenism with Persian influences. In this book, distinguished scholars examine - from a variety of perspectives - the origins of the Parthians, their history, religion and culture, as well as perceptions of their empire through the lens of both imperial Rome and China.
