L'objectif de cette thèse est de préciser l'effet des émotions sur trois systèmes de mémoire (mémoire épisodique, sémantique et perceptive) dans le fonctionnement normal (sujets jeunes et âgés). De nombreuses études ont montré que les émotions ont un effet bénéfique sur la mémoire épisodique mais les autres systèmes ont été peu explorés ; de plus ces résultats ont été observés chez les sujets jeunes mais ils sont moins clairs chez les sujets âgés. Notre première étude menée chez des sujets jeunes a montré que l'effet des émotions de faible intensité (visages émotionnels) sur la mémoire est peu marqué : seules les émotions négatives ont un effet bénéfique sur la mémoire épisodique et la mémoire perceptive, les émotions positives ayant au contraire un effet perturbateur sur la mémoire épisodique. Concernant le vieillissement et ses effets sur la mémoire, nous avons montré que des modifications de l'activité cérébrale peuvent survenir dès 50 ans, bien avant les premières modifications comportementales. De plus, l'analyse des potentiels évoqués a montré que tous les processus mnésiques ne sont pas sensibles à l'âge de la même manière. Enfin, nous avons montré dans une troisième étude que l'effet des émotions s'inverse en partie avec l'âge : les performances en mémoire sémantique sont améliorées par les émotions positives alors que les performances en mémoire épisodique déclinent davantage pour les visages négatifs, l'effet restant inchangé pour la mémoire perceptive. L'ensemble de ces résultats suggère que l'effet des émotions pourrait être distinct selon le système de mémoire et que cet effet évolue avec l'âge pour la mémoire épisodique et la mémoire sémantique.

Memory is central to our existence. But not all memories are created equal. As the novelist Doris Lessing observed, It's extraordinary how little we do remember. It's almost as if memory is not considered useful by nature. So how does memory work, and why do most experiences leave little trace while some leave memories that last a lifetime? Drawing on many case studies, the author, a distinguished neuroscientist, reveals how some of the best clues to understanding how memories are created come from understanding how memories are lost. He shows how lasting memories are not stored instantly. Rather, the consolidation of long term memory takes time, and the disruption of newly consolidating memories leaves them permanently weakened. But why is time required? Is the brain a design failure? Perhaps, but most likely not, says the author. The slow consolidation of memory has, he contends, an important adaptive consequence. It allows physiological processes activated by experiences to regulate the strength of the memory for the experiences. Experiences initiate the consolidation of memory. which can then act on the brain to influence the consolidation of recent experience. Insignificant experiences therefore leave only fleeting traces and significant experiences become memorable - findings that have important implications for the controversial issues of post traumatic stress disorder and repressed memory syndrome.

The question of how well children recall and can discuss emotional experiences is one with numerous theoretical and applied implications. Theoretically, the role of emotions generally and emotional distress specifically in children's emerging cognitive abilities has implications for understanding how children attend to and process information, how children react to emotional information, and how that information affects their development and functioning over time. Practically speaking, increasing numbers of children have been involved in legal settings as victims or witnesses to violence, highlighting the need to determine the extent to which children's eyewitness reports of traumatic experiences are accurate and complete. In clinical contexts, the ability to narrate emotional events is emerging as a significant predictor of psychological outcomes. How children learn to describe emotional experiences and the extent to which they can do so coherently thus has important implications for clinical interventions.

Finally, the authors propose that a renewed emphasis on conscious thought and narrative memory may provide an integrative bridge among personality, social, clinical, and cognitive psychologists. Such an approach, the authors argue, could reduce the tension between heavily quantitative psychologists and qualitatively oriented phenomenologists, leading to a more inclusive and complex vision of the whole person.
