The Economics of Export Embargoes
Author: Per Lundborg
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351588818
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 143
Book Description
Export embargoes are imposed in the belief that enough economic damage will be inflicted on the target country to make it change course on some key political point. However, export embargoes also have economic consequences for producers in the country which imposes the embargo and for producers in third party countries. This book, first published in 1987, analyses the economic effects of export embargoes. It presents much general analysis on the topic and goes on, making use of a model, to examine in detail the 1980 US embargo on grain sales to the Soviet Union. Among the book’s findings is the importance of expectations concerning how long the embargo will last in determining both the success of the embargo and the impact on produces in the country imposing the embargo.

Soviet Foreign Economic Policy and International Security
Author: Eric Stubbs
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315490277
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 174
Book Description
More than half a decade has passed since Gorbachev launched his "prerestroika" programme to reform the Soviet Union, but the struggle between reformers and conservatives continues to rage while the final outcome, and even the goals of the programme, remains a mystery. Whatever the outcome of this transformation, its impact will reverberate well beyond the borders of the USSR to shape US security and commercial policies into the next century. This edited volume brings together original essays by US-Soviet relations scholars and international business and security experts to explore the many complex and critical issues that the United States must confront in developing its commercial and security policies for the next decade.

East European Reliance on Technology Imports from the West
Author: Steven W. Popper
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Imports
Languages : en
Pages : 536
Book Description
"This report, an overview of current East European reliance on technology imports from the West, assesses the importance to the East Europeans of these imports. The study develops a measure to provide a relative scale of reliance on Western imports for a sample of high-technology commodities for each of the six East European members of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA), the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia, from 1980-1984. The analysis indicates that (1) there is a great diversity in the degree of reliance on Western imports between countries and across commodities; (2) the measure of Western import reliance generally declined during this period; (3) the countries of Eastern Europe tend to rely on the West more for the less compressible higher-technology goods included in the sample than for general machinery imports, and they rely more on the CMEA than on the Soviet Union; and (4) U.S. ability to unilaterally affect Western technology deliveries to Eastern Europe is limited."--Rand abstracts.
