Book Description
Excerpt from A Broader Elementary Education In the conviction, also, that there can be no fundamental study of education that does not seek to ascertain the end education should strive to reach, and the impulses and capacities it must appeal to, and that there can be no rational teaching that is not based on definite notions as to these matters, he has endeavored to present those notions as clearly as may be; and he has sought to base all his recommendations as to practice upon his conclusions. A prominent feature of the book is the emphasis laid upon the doctrine that there is a place for the will in education. The current theory inherited from Herbart, and by him from Rousseau, that everything should be made to depend upon interest, that there should be no must in education. Book Description
Excerpt from Pestalozzi and Elementary Education IN placing the name of Pestalozzi after those of Rousseau and Spencer, in the list of great educators, we render rightful tribute to a man of heart, a man of action', praiseworthy in both, who is not well enough known in France, where he is by turns cried down, neglected, or unduly exalted, but who, impartially judged, merits one of the chief places in the golden book of the history of education. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Schools To write even a very small book which shall be useful on a highly controversial question is not easy. And the fact that the question is in a transition state makes it no easier. Yet it seemed desirable to publish something at the present time for the use of the younger clergy, which should supply them with a general view of the history of the Education question, and should also indicate some of those great principles which must always guide the Church's policy on that subject. The writer has endeavoured to confine himself as far as possible to facts and principles, adding a few practical hints on teaching and manage ment. Book Description
Excerpt from Problems of the Elementary School It is clearly impossible for an essayist to make form al acknowledgment of all the sources of his inspira tion. The student of education keeps his mind open to the influence of every honest word whether spoken by the thinkers of old or by the seers of to-day, and he keeps his heart open to the influence of the living child, to whom all educational systems owe their ex istence. And who shall say which speaks the more effectively, Plato and Emerson and Mark Hopkins, or the tow-headed boy in the fourth seat in the third row and the patient teacher who is leading him, helpfully and hopefully, according to her lights? Book Description
Excerpt from Literature in the Elementary School This book had its origin in several years of experience and experiment in teaching classes in literature in the Laboratory School of the University of Chicago, when that fruitful venture in education was being conducted by Professor John Dewey; in many years of private reading with children; and in many years of lecturing to teachers of children. Indeed, all the material bears the unconcealable marks of its origin as lectures, it being extremely difficult to turn into decorous chapters in a book, stuff which first took shape as spontaneous and informal lectures. The central matter of the book was published as a series of articles in the Elementary School Teacher of October, November, and December, 1902, and a synopsis of the whole book was printed and widely circulated in January, 1904. These facts may partially account for a certain familiarity that many readers will perceive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
