Book Description
The diffraction effects expected from the periodic structure of twist boundaries in Si were determined by an examination of the reciprocal lattice of these boundaries. Methods of analysis were developed to distinguish between the real diffraction spots due to the periodic boundary structure and those due to double diffraction effects. The electron microscope images for the boundaries studied in Si bicrystals frequently were complex and contained Moire fringes which provided no information on the actual boundary structure. By analyzing the electron diffraction patterns from these boundaries for the presence of new diffraction spots it was possible to show that all the .sigma.1 (001), .sigma.1 (111), and .sigma.3 (111) twist boundaries examined have a periodic structure.

Book Description
Electron diffraction and microscopy studies supplemented by electron spectroscopic techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the nature of grain boundary segregation in commercial grade (Mn, Zn)Fe2O4 samples containing small quantities of CaO. Chemical analyses by AES and EDAX show an enrichment of Ca near the grain boundary region. Convergent beam electron diffraction experiments show that the crystal symmetry of the spinel structure is distorted in the vicinity of the grain boundary. In-situ heating experiments in HVEM show the existence of a disordered phase at the sintering temperature. Lorentz microscopy in TEM shows the interaction of magnetic domain wall motion with grain boundaries. These chemical and structural features are correlated with electrical resistivity and magnetic permeability of the ferrites. 4 figures.

Book Description
The Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ceramic Microstructures '86: Role of Interfaces presents a comprehensive coverage of the past decade's advances in ceramic science and technology related to microstructures. The term microstructure is used in the broad sense and is synonymous with char~cter. Character is defined as a complete detailed description of chemical and physical characteristics of a material. This symposium is the third in a series, held every ten years, on ceramic microstructures. The first symposium, in 1966, had as a subtitle "Their Analysis, Significance and Production" and emphasized the need and importance of characterization in order to fully understand the chemical and physical properties of materials. The second Symposium, in 1976, placed emphasis on the exploration of characters most suited and needed for "Energy-Related Applications." By the time of that conference, the sequence of processing--characterization--properties was fully accepted. It was recognized that characterization was the basis of materials science; the objective of processing was to produce a desired character that was considered necessary to realize a given property or behavior. To further emphasize the importance of character, the symposium dealt primarily with the property/character coupling.

Book Description
One of the fundamental objectives of physical geochemistry is to understand the evolution of geochemical systems from microscopic to regional and global scales. At present there seems to be a general recognition of the fact that internal properties of minerals record important aspects of the evolutionary history of their host rocks which may be unraveled by very fine scale observations. A major focus in the development of geochemical research in the last thirty years has been the application of classical thermodynamics to reconstruct the conditions at which the states of quenched mineralogical properties of rocks have equilibrated during the course of their evolution. While these works have funda mentally influenced our understanding ofthe physico-chemical history ofrocks, in recent years petrologists, mineralogists, and geochemists have been making greater efforts towards the application of kinetic theories in order to develop a better appreciation of the temporal details of geochemical processes. The present volume brings together a variety of current research on transport in systems of geochemical interest from atomic to outcrop scales. A major theme is atomic migration or diffusion, and its various manifestations on microscopic and macroscopic scales. Transport in the solid state is controlled by diffusion and is responsible for the states of atomic ordering and relaxation of composi tional zoning in minerals, development of compositional zoning during cooling, exsolution lamellae, and creep.
