Book Description
Electron cyclotron (EC) power has technological and physics advantages for heating and current drive in a tokamak reactor, and advances in source development make it credible for applications in ITER. Strong single pass absorption makes heating to ignition particularly simple. The optimized EC current drive (ECCD) efficiency (nIR/P) shows a linear temperature scaling at temperatures up to (approximately)15 keV. For temperatures above 30 keV, the efficiency saturates at approximately 0.3·102° A/(m2W) for a frequency of 220 GHz in an ITER target plasma with toroidal field of 6 T, due primarily to harmonic overlap and to a lesser extent due to limitations arising from relativistic effects. The same efficiency can also be obtained at 170 GHz for the same plasma equilibrium except that the magnetic field is reduced to (170/200) x 6 T = 4.6 T. The ECCD efficiencies are obtained with the comprehensive 3D, bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck CQL3D codes and BANDIT3D.

Book Description
The 12th Joint Workshop on Electron Cyclotron Emission and Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (EC-12) was held in Aix-en-Provence (France) from May 13 to 16, 2002. This workshop was concerned with the interaction of electromagnetic waves and hot plasmas, a subject of great importance in the framework of research on controlled thermonuclear fusion. Using as a fuel a mixture of deuterium and tritium, which can be extracted from sea water, this is a very promising way to develop an intrinsically safe reactor. The workshop gathered approximately one hundred specialists in the production, use and theory of millimetre waves for heating and diagnostics of fusion plasmas.

Book Description
The conference proceedings will include the papers of approximately 50 key specialists from most of the world's major fusion laboratories, including the European Community, the U.S., Russia and the PRC. The unifying themes are the emission of electron cyclotron waves by high temperature plasmas and the reciprocal process, absorption, which can be used for heating, non inductive current drive and diagnostic purposes.

Book Description
A conceptual design has been developed for a reference current drive and heating system for a HARD (High Aspect Ratio Design) option for ITER. Twelve neutral beam modules, each rated at 1.3MeV and 9.2MW, perform plasma heating and current drive. An electron cyclotron system is used for initiating the plasma and for disruption control. An alternate system has been defined which is comprised of a lower hybrid and ion cyclotron system for heating and current drive, augmented by the same electron cyclotron system proposed for the reference system. 7 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

Book Description
This proceedings volume, the sixteenth in a biannual series, presents a snapshot of the state of current research worldwide on Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) and Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) and related technologies. The papers address the physics, both theory and experiment, of ECE and ECRH. The technologies of high power millimeter-wave sources — gyrotrons — and transmission lines and launchers are included. The focus is on physics and technology relevant to the research and development of nuclear fusion.
