Book Description
This book originated in the Proceedings of the Second Symposium on Polymeric Liquid Crystals held by the Division of Polymer Chemistry in the framework of the 1983 Fall Meeting of the American Chemical Society. At the First Symposium in 1977, the literature in this field could be encompassed in a single volume. To day, that is no longer possible. The field of Polymeric Liquid Crystals grew, and continues to grow, at a very rapid pace. At present, we know of every major mesophase in its polymeric form and of polymeric glasses, elastomers and fluids in their liquid crystalline form. Every year, new polymeric mesophases are being discovered. The aim of this book is to go beyond a compilation of papers presented at the 1983 ACS Fall Meeting. It is conceived as a learning tool for the benefit of the sci entist interested in Polymeric Liquid Crystals. The book is divided into three sections. The first section contains articles discussing synthetic, physico chemical, structural and rheological aspects of Polymeric Liquid Crystals in their generality. A chapter on methods currently used in this field is also included. There are also chapters on theoretical and classification aspects of PLCs. These self-contained tutorial chapters provide an introduction to this field as well as to the specific papers given in the book. They provide an exhaustive cover age of literature on the subject from its inception to the present.

Book Description
Modern society makes increasing demands for novelty in materials and their properties which are ever more exacting. Crystalline polymers are in the forefront of this demand and improvements are constantly occurring across the entire range from existing materials of high tonnage to novel materials with application in information technology. The developments recorded in this volume reflect this situation. Chapter 1 is a comprehensive review of the polymer PHB, poly(hydroxybutyrate), which is new to industrial manufacturing but is a naturally occurring substance. It has potentially valuable properties but has excited interest especially because it is biodegradable. It may, therefore, provide one means of reducing environmental pollution. Improvements in existing materials, beyond those which are ob tainable by optimization of known variables, are most likely to come from understanding of structure-property relationships. Polymer is able to make effective science has now reached the stage where it synthesis of information from complementary techniques, leading to rapidly deepening understanding. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are all con cerned with technical developments which are contributing substan tially to this synthesis. The possibilities of electron microscopy, specifically the characterization of lamellar microstructure, have been transformed by permanganic etching. Now real organization (which can be very different from what had previously been inferred) can be used as a basis for explaining polymeric properties. In Chapter 3, Mitchell and Windle give a critical account of the assessment of orientation in liquid crystalline polymers, a rapidly developing new field in which they have played a leading part.

Book Description
This is a monograph/text devoted to a detailed treatment of the optical, electro-optical and nonlinear optical properties of all the mesophases of liquid crystals and related processes, phenomena and application principles. Quantitative data on material and optical parameters spanning the ultraviolet, visible, infrared as well as the microwave regimes are presented along with detailed theoretical treatments of basic liquid crystal physics, material properties and nonlinear optics.Starting with a discussion on the basic building blocks of liquid crystalline molecules, the authors proceed to present in a pedagogical manner current theories, experiments, and applications of these unique and important optical properties of liquid crystals. Numerous tables of hard-to-find liquid crystalline parameters, a self-contained chapter on general nonlinear optics, and comprehensive literature review are also included.
