This edited collection explores the pivotal role of the hotel industry in building Western Europe’s tourism economy during the 20th century. El "boom" turístico español es un fenómeno tan conocido como poco debatido. En la memoria colectiva ha quedado vinculado a una serie de espacios —Benidorm, Torremolinos— e iconos simbólicos —el biquini, "las suecas"— que dan forma a una narración estereotipada. Con la finalidad de matizar y enriquecer dicho relato, el presente libro propone una revisión de la cultura visual del "boom". La autora analiza un nutrido corpus documental extraído de archivos nacionales y extranjeros, sirviéndose de herramientas analíticas de los estudios visuales y de la antropología del turismo. El repertorio iconográfico resultante revela que el imaginario de lo español durante la dictadura franquista fue mucho más complejo de lo que "a priori" podría pensarse, con una constante negociación entre las imágenes que respondían a la búsqueda de experiencias de los turistas y aquellas en las que un país en pleno proceso de modernización deseaba verse reconocido.
