Surveys the Jewish and Converso experience in medieval and early modern Spain. Describes anti-Jewish actions before 1492, such as the forced conversions in 1391 and the creation of the new Inquisition in Seville in 1480. Analyzes the anti-Converso phenomenon from the 16th century on: under Carlos V suspicions against Judaizers increased, Conversos were accused of participation in the Comunero movement, and they were subject to "limpieza de sangre" statutes. Beginning in Felipe II's reign, religious discrimination and the pressure of the Inquisition decreased, but political-social differences were stressed by the Administration and the Cortes, reducing Conversos to second class citizens, barred from state offices, the clergy, and the army. States that Conversos were hated not by the elite, but by the popular classes. Waves of persecution of Portuguese Conversos in Spain occurred in the 16th-18th centuries. Refers, also, to Sephardic Jews and the Jewish contribution to the making of the capitalist system. Annexe 1 (p. 193-206) deals with the Chuetas of Mallorca.

This work, the fruit of intense research work spanning several years, examines the first serious attempt by the descendants of the Sephardim—the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492—to “return to Sepharad” more than three decades after the abolition of the Inquisition. At the beginning of the nineteenth century a trend towards historical revisionism, backed by Liberals, whose influence was pivotal at the Cortes de Cádiz (the national assembly convened to assert Spanish sovereignty, introduce reform, and establish a modern Spanish nation), combined with economic factors, culminated in the abolition of the Inquisition in 1834. This paved the way, ideologically, for the freedom of worship to be proclaimed in Spain on the heels of La Septembrina, or La Gloriosa, the September Revolution of 1868 in which Queen Isabel II was deposed. European Sephardic Jews, galvanized by their perception of a tolerant Spain, decided to undertake a major project to initiate negotiations with the Spanish state.

Argues, contrary to most scholarly opinion, that while on the explicit level they are anti-Jewish, in a covert manner the dramatic works of the Spanish Golden Age present a positive image of the Jews. Works by Rojas, Cervantes, and, especially, Lope de Vega are shown to have used coded writing and techniques of dissimulation to subvert the dominant anti-Jewish ideology of the day, embodied in the actions of the Inquisition and in the "limpieza de sangre" statutes. A reason for the indirect approach was that the writers, who were influenced by Christian Humanism rather than by any putative Converso origin, themselves sought to escape interrogation by the Inquisition. One technique used was to replace the Converso by the figure of a persecuted woman or by a biblical, legendary, or foreign Jew. Defending the Jews was an aspect of espousal of justice for all.

Private and public relationships - frequently labelled as friendships - have always played a crucial role in human societies. Yet, over the centuries ideas and meanings of friendship transformed, adapting to the political and social climates of different periods. Changing concepts and practices of friendship characterized the intellectual, social, political and cultural panorama of medieval Europe, including that of thiteenth-century Iberia. Subject of conquests and 'Reconquest', land of convivencia, but also of political instability, as well as of secular and religious international power-struggles: the articulation of friendship within its borders is a particularly fraught subject to study. Drawing on some of the encyclopaedic vernacular masterpieces produced in the scriptorium of 'The Wise' King, Alfonso X of Castile (1252-84), this study explores the political, religious and social networks, inter-faith and gender relationships, legal definitions, as well as bonds of tutorship and companionship, which were frequently defined through the vocabulary and rhetoric of friendship. This study demonstares how the values and meanings of amicitia, often associated with classical, Roman, Visigothic and Eastern traditions, were transformed to adapt to Alfonso X’s cultural projects and political propaganda. This book contributes to the study of the history of emotions and cultural histories of the Middle Ages, while also emphasizing how Iberia was a peripheral, but still vital, ring in a chiain which linked it to the rest of Europe, while also occupying a central role in the historical and cultural developments of the Western Mediterranean.
