Book Description
The Cultural Politics of Twentieth-Century Spanish Theater argues that twentieth-century artists used the Golden Age Eucharist plays called autos sacramentales to reassess the way politics and the arts interact in the Spanish nation’s past and present, and to posit new ideas for future relations between the state and the national culture industry. The book traces the phenomenon of the twentieth-century auto to show how theater practitioners revisited this national genre to manifest different, oftentimes opposing, ideological and aesthetic agendas. It follows the auto from the avant-garde stagings and rewritings of the form in the early twentieth century, to the Francoist productions by the Teatro Nacional de la Falange, to postmodern parodies of the form in the era following Franco’s death to demonstrate how twentieth-century Spanish dramatists use the auto in their reassessment of the nation’s political and artistic past, and as a way of envisioning its future.

Book Description
James Martin has led an entirely modern life: from a lukewarm Catholic childhood, to an education at the Wharton School of Business, to the executive fast track at General Electric, to ministry as a Jesuit priest, to a busy media career in Manhattan. But at every step he has been accompanied by some surprising friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. For many, these holy men and women remain just historical figures. For Martin, they are intimate companions. “They pray for me, offer me comfort, give me examples of discipleship, and help me along the way,” he writes. The author is both engaging and specific about the help and companionship he has received. When his pride proves troublesome, he seeks help from Thomas Merton, the monk and writer who struggled with egotism. In sickness he turns to Thérèse of Lisieux, who knew about the boredom and self-pity that come with illness. Joan of Arc shores up his flagging courage. Aloysius Gonzaga deepens his compassion. Pope John XXIII helps him to laugh and not take life too seriously. Martin’s inspiring, witty, and always fascinating memoir encompasses saints from the whole of Christian history— from St. Peter to Dorothy Day. His saintly friends include Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Mother Teresa, and other beloved figures. They accompany the author on a lifelong pilgrimage that includes stops in a sunlit square of a French town, a quiet retreat house on a New England beach, the gritty housing projects of inner-city Chicago, the sprawling slums of Nairobi, and a gorgeous Baroque church in Rome. This rich, vibrant, stirring narrative shows how the saints can help all of us find our way in the world.

Book Description
"This collection of essays invites the contemporary reader to consider the works of Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-81), who became the most important and influential dramatist of the second period of the Spanish Golden Age, just as Lope de Vega (1562-1635) was for the preceding generation. A follower of Lope in his youth, Calderon, as a mature playwright, developed a drama all of his own, a drama that was highly conceptual, tightly knit, symbolic, and, in many cases, spectacular. Calderon's artistry in verbal and visual symbolism made the performance of his works a feast for both the senses and the intellect." "Until now, many of Calderon's critics have focused their attention on how the poetic devices, particularly metaphors and symbols, appearing in his plays represent his philosophy or his ideas. But as some scholars of Spanish Golden Age drama have argued, the study of Calderon's theater must take into account not only the literary text, but also the physical conditions of the stage, the elements used in the representation - decor, costumes, lighting, music - and the house dynamics at each performance. In other words, each play must be considered as a composition of the soul and body, of poetry and spectacle, in which both elements support, complement, and explain one another in performance." "This is the task that has been undertaken by the contributors to this volume. By focusing on the relationship between text and performance, they have highlighted several areas that are often overlooked in traditional text-based approaches. From different perspectives, they show how Calderon gives concrete shape to the concepts and tales from the Bible, theology, mythology, the Corpus Hermeticum, emblematic literature, philosophy, and realities of civic and domestic origin."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description
Spanish Drama of the Golden Age describes this little-known field of European drama. This book describes and analyzes Spanish plays and drama. It reviews the Spanish plays from the 1580s to the death of Pedro Calderon de la Barca in 1681. This text also discusses the controversy to which direction the Spanish theater would take: whether it is for entertainment or a representation of the intellect and emotions. This book describes Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and the rise of the Spanish comedia. The text describes how Lope wrote his plays and how he sold them outright to the manager of an acting company, which became its property. The text also describes the life of Tirso de Molina who was often criticized for his cavalier treatment of a historical fact. This book also discusses the works of Ruiz de Alarcon, Guillen de Castro, Velez de Guevara, and Mira de Amescua. This book also assess this period of Spanish drama in terms of the influence of other countries in Europe such as Britain and France. This book can prove valuable for university students of Spanish, Spanish literature teachers to students of sixth forms, and Spanish historians.

Book Description
This book contrasts the portrayal of kings and kingship in the drama of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and the Spanish playwright Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-81), concentrating on the ways in which both dramatists use the individual complexities of their kingly characters to address the intellectual and moral dilemmas of the ideological backgrounds that helped to create them. Against the background of seventeenth-century Europe, when religious and political reformation was leading to reconstructions of concepts of authority and personal and national identity, these two dramatists of early modern England and Spain use the increasingly theatrical facades of absolutist power to explore the internal drama of individual psychology and the kinship of flawed humanity.
