Pay
Author: Mark Smith
Publisher: IUCN
ISBN: 283170958X
Category : Water use
Languages : en
Pages : 113
Book Description
This guide aims to provide practical tools to non specialists-essentially water resources planners, river basin managers, non-governmental organizations and private sector operators. It links the most recent practice on payments for hydrological services to current discourse on integrated water resources management and looks into the different aspects to consider when exploring the potential feasibility of establishing reward or payments for ecosystem services related to water security. Pay demystifies concepts and jargon, and through a series of tools, case studies and stories from around the world, describes pitfalls to avoid and provides hints to fill gaps in knowledge. It is based on a demand-driven approach, linking text, tools and illustrations to key questions emerging from current and potential practitioners.

Water and Cities in Latin America
Author: Ismael Aguilar-Barajas
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317906896
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
Approximately 80 per cent of the population of Latin America is concentrated in urban centres. Pressure on water resources and water management in cities therefore provide major challenges. Despite the importance of the issues, there has been little systematic coverage of the topic in book form. This work fills a gap in the literature by providing both thematic overviews and case study chapters. It reviews key aspects of why water matters in cities and presents case studies on topics such as groundwater management, green growth and water services, inequalities in water supply, the financing of water services and flood management. Detailed examples are described from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, and there is also a chapter comparing lessons which might be learnt from US cities. Contributing authors are drawn from both within and outside the region, including from the Inter-American Development Bank, OECD and World Bank to set the issues in a global context.

Urban Planning for Social Justice in Latin America
Author: Camilo Espitia
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000884295
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Urban Planning for Social Justice in Latin America explores how urban planning can be used as a tool for social equity. The book examines several Latin American cities, each with specific challenges, and explores how they have gradually overcome these difficulties through policies, planning, and design, and with private/public sector coordination. The cases include: The built environment and social mobility in Bogotá; Mexico City and its difficulties with water scarcity; Addressing air quality and environmental justice in Lima; Santiago de Chile’s energy consumption and carbon footprint; Buenos Aires and the issue of urban agriculture and food security; Connectivity as a social transformation device in Medellín. The book goes beyond simply identifying the challenges and explains some of the practical day-to-day planning efforts, including interviews with staff from those municipalities, illustrations, and strategies that have been successful. As a result, this book will be helpful to planners in the region, as well as outside Latin America, because it demonstrates how fruitful results can be achieved in areas typically perceived as underdeveloped. Although based on research and data, this book offers a positive perspective on the possibilities rather than the limitations, hoping to inspire new generations of planners to pursue careers in search of social change.
