Book Description
This book is closely related to the energy conservation problem of rail transport systems, focusing on reducing the energy consumption of train operation. The system process of train operation is analyzed and the relationship between train operation and energy consumption is introduced. The fundamental theories, modelling and application of technologies for energy-efficient train driving are presented, discussing timely topics such as energy-efficient train control and timetabling, integrated timetabling and regenerative braking, and maximizing regenerated energy usage with energy storage systems. In addition, the modelling and application of a traction power simulation platform is introduced, to calculate the detailed energy flow over a railway network. The book is enriched with a set of practical examples to illustrate the performance of the proposed methods in improving energy efficiency of both urban and long-distance trains. Overall, the book provides a timely guide to professionals in the railway industry, and to researchers and graduate students in transport, electrical and control engineering.

Book Description
Rail is potentially a very efficient form of transport, but must be convenient, reliable and cost-effective to compete with road and air transport. Optimal control can be used to find energy-efficient driving strategies for trains. This book describes the train control problem and shows how a solution was found at the University of South Australia. This research was used to develop the Metromiser system, which provides energy-efficient driving advice on suburban trains. Since then, this work has been modified to find practical driving strategies for long-haul trains. The authors describe the history of the problem, reviewing the basic mathematical analysis and relevant techniques of constrained optimisation. They outline the modelling and solution of the problem and finally explain how the fuel consumption can be minimised for a journey, showing the effect of speed limits and track gradients on the optimal driving strategy.

Book Description
The ITF has produced a series of reports and discussion papers addressing the interrelated issues of railway structure and performance; see for example Beck et al. (2013), Thompson (2013), ECMT (2007) and, Thompson (2007). The academic literature on this subject is also significant, with good examples in Mizutani et al (2014), Nash et al. (2013), Van de Velde et al. (2012) and Kirchner (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2011). All of these studies have confronted the question of how to measure the performance, or efficiency, of railways both in the sense of how one railway compares with others (cross-section) and how railways have changed as a result of policy interventions (time-series). The purpose of the roundtable discussions was to revisit the issue of how to define and measure efficiency at the proper level of detail and with reasonably available data so that policy makers can benchmark the performance of their railways, evaluate the impact of past changes in railway structure, ownership or regulation and assess the likely outcome of future initiatives. The challenge is inherent in the phrases "proper level of detail" and "reasonably available data."

Book Description
Competitive tendering provides a way to introduce competition to railways whilst preserving an integrated network of services. It has been used for freight railways in some countries but is particularly attractive for passenger networks when subsidised services make competition between trains serving the same routes difficult or impossible to organise. Governments promote competition in railways to reduce costs, not least to the tax payer, and to improve levels of service to customers. Concessions are also designed to bring much needed private capital into the rail industry. The success of competitive tendering in achieving these outcomes depends critically on the way risks are assigned between the government and private train operators. It also depends on the transparency and durability of the regulatory framework established to protect both the public interest and the interests of concession holders, and on the incentives created by franchise agreements. This report examines experience to date from around the world in competitively tendering rail services. It seeks to draw lessons for effective design of concessions and regulation from both the successful and less successful cases examined. The work is based on detailed examinations by leading experts of the experience of passenger rail concessions in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. It also draws on examples of freight rail concessions in Latin America.

Book Description
Excerpt from Efficient Railway Operation After many years of experience in railway construction, operation and administration, the author has published a series of works on those subjects, principally in relation to the successive stages of regulation of the railway system of the United States by means of legislation, both State and national. These works are largely the outcome of the author's own personal knowledge, experience and research, and reference is herein made to them, in some cases, where the same matters have been discussed at greater length in the former volumes. It is the aim of the present work to describe the progressive development of efficiency in the operation of the railway system of the United States, as compared with similar progress in other countries. It has been prepared at the suggestion of many persons who have inquired for authoritative works on the subject, that would be of value especially to students in technical schools and to junior railroad employees, as well as of interest to the general reader. With this two-fold object in view, there have been added, in appendices, very complete tables of statistics and much strictly technical information, drawn from official sources. Reference to authorities and explanations of terms have been given in footnotes. The work is devoted to operation, as distinguished from administration. It deals with facts, and not with opinions; therefore, it does not discuss matters of finance, or rates or labor questions. The author desires to acknowledge the valued assistance of railroad officials and friends in bringing the information down to the present year, and for much that is included in the chapter on the use of railroads in war-time. In the revision of technical matter, preparation of index and addenda, correction of proofs and general supervision of the work through the press, he has had the aid of Charles A. Hammond, C. E.
