Book Description
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research was to find out the effects of substance abuse on antisocial behaviours of youth in Accra. The main instrument used for the collection of data was the survey research method. A simple random sample technique was used in the selection of 100 participants ranging between the ages of 13-24 years using both descriptive and inferential statistics in analysing data. Substance abuse has been linked to anti-social behaviours, depression, conduct problems, personality disorders, suicidal thoughts and learning disability. In the USA, males under the ages of 18 years arrested for drug offenses had the highest rate of positive substance tests when compared to young people arrested for other criminal offences. However, a substantial rate of illicit substance use was also found among youth who committed violence and other crimes. It is noted that adolescents who abuse alcohol and other substances usually withdraw from school and community activities thereby depriving their families, friends and communities of the positive impacts they might otherwise have made. The findings of the research indicated that substance abuse does have a significant influence or effect on anti-social behaviours of adolescents in Accra. Analysis revealed that there is a significant difference between males and females with regards to anti-social behaviours. Moreover, the frequency of substance abuse correlated positively with anti-social behaviours. It is therefore recommended that counselling departments and clinical psychologists departments should be established in order for young people to seek professional assistance in dealing with strong emotions associated with antisocial behaviours. These departments will enable both counsellors and psychologists to function effectively in helping youth in the country to better handle strong emotions associated with substance abuse and antisocial behaviours, thereby helping them to better cope with peers, friends, family members and he community at large.

The Mobile City of Accra
Author: Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf
Publisher: African Books Collective
ISBN: 2869785453
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
This book is a product of collaborative research between the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD, France), the University of Ghana, Legon and CODESRIA. It examines various economic, social and environmental challenges of urbanization that critically affect the capital of Ghana, which has experienced high demographic growth and territorial expansion. This work analyses the Greater Accra city dwellers' residential practices, and focuses on two main factors influencing land and rental markets. On the one hand, it interrogates the constraints and dynamics of urban families, their needs and gender characteristics in terms of accommodation. On the other hand, it explores the opportunities and interests in investment on the part of land owners and real estate developers. At these two levels of describing the social and spatial discriminations, the book attempts to explain the difficult choices that this fragmented city faces. It emphasizes the role of mobility in structuring the metropolitan area, and the negative impact of lack of mobility which results in some households and communities suffering more than others. The book throws light on diagnostics and prospects in the matter of urban planning.

Substance Use and Abuse
Author: Victor N. Shaw
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313012075
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
While the issues of substance use and abuse have been addressed from a variety of perspectives and approaches, the fundamental social issues have not been covered in any systematic way. This book represents the first academic effort to apply major sociological theories to the field of substance use and abuse in order to provide readers with a solid knowledge base from which they may develop more informed ideas about prevention, intervention, treatment, law enforcement, and social reactions to this ubiquitous social problem. Using a systematic framework, Shaw reviews the existing literature, explains key concepts, addresses fundamental issues, and discusses the policy implications for public health, social control, community, and work. This comprehensive sociological treatment of substance use and abuse is essential reading for educators in public policy, sociology, criminology, and deviance. Applying the major sociological theories of anomie, career, conflict, functionalist, rational choice, social control, social disorganization, social learning, social reaction, and subculture perspectives, Shaw provides an important overview of the issues involved with substance use and abuse. By utilizing such an approach, he demonstrates that public views, governmental policies, intervention strategies, and prevention programming can be informed by the different sociological theories. This unique consideration and analysis illustrates that no single view on substance use and abuse is absolute or sacred. Therefore, considering the issues from a variety of sociological perspectives will bring greater understanding to a pervasive social problem that continues to plague American society.
