Deliberately underirrigating a crop may yield economic benefits. The optimal use of water by an irrigator should be achieved under a deficit irrigation regime. It is important to know how water deficits affect yields and the interaction of the deficits with the scheduling of irrigations. A field experiment was conducted during the 1981 irrigation season to investigate the effects of high and low frequency deficit irrigation on yields of winter wheat. Yield and water use data were used to construct three production functions. The relationship between the level of water use and the resulting yield were determined for three irrigation frequency regimes. Field plots under daily (high frequency), weekly (normal frequency), and stress (reduced frequency) regimes were included in the field experiment as well as two dryland production plots. The relationships derived from this project were characterized by a large degree of scatter in the results. Highly favorable weather conditions offset the effects of irrigation deficits on plant yields throughout the irrigation season. At this time, a second year of data is in the process of compilation. The results of a regression analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the water use-yield relationships of the three irrigation frequency regimes. The effect of frequency did not lead to any readily apparent differences in the three production functions. The efficiency of water use of the different irrigation frequencies increases with decreasing amount of applied water for the 1981 crop year. The most efficient treatment, i.e., least water use per unit of yield, was the pre-plant irrigated, dryfarmed plots. The density of the wheat, a measure of crop quality also increased with decreased water use in this experiment. The optimal irrigation treatment (measured by production and quality) was the two-week frequency set.

Wheat is the 3rd most prominent crop in the USA and approximately 50% is exported annually. Nebraska wheat production is 11th in the country, and it plays a major role in the state's agricultural economy, especially in western NE. Generally, wheat is grown under dryland conditions and the region grows much more wheat on unirrigated land than it does on irrigated. However, deficit irrigation has shown great value in producing high yielding wheat with much less water than needed for other crops. Finding new ways to leverage irrigation in wheat production may help address the need to produce food with fewer inputs. The objective of this project was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen, irrigation, and cultivar on grain yield and quality. A randomized complete block with split-split plots was used as the design for this experiment. Six cultivars were (Anton, Armour, Overland, Settler-CL, Snowmass, Wesley), five nitrogen treatments (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 lbs of N per acre) and three irrigation treatments (0, 6, 12 inches) were used. Plots were harvested when mature using small plot combines equipped with onboard weighing systems. Differences between years had a dramatic effect on yield across all treatments and all locations. However, when correcting for rainfall, location didn't have a substantial impact on yield. Irrigation events only occurred at the Scottsbluff location. Irrigation had a significant effect when compared to dryland production, but the effect of 6 and 12-inch irrigation treatments was subtler and at times not significant. Nitrogen had little effect on yield or predicted grain protein. Variety had a significant effect on both yield and predicted grain protein, and this trend was consistent across years and locations. Test weight (TWT) was not responsive to nitrogen or irrigation, but varietal differences were significant and some trends remained constant from year to year. However, TWT trends did not align between locations in either year. Gluten response was very similar to protein, but the response was much less dramatic.

Winter wheat yield in the western United States is limited by two major factors: nutrients (such as nitrogen) and moisture. This research examined the interactions of moisture and nutrient supply on yield, flour quality, agronomic traits, and both organic and inorganic nutrient fate within the soil profile with both hard white (Golden Spike) and soft white (ID 576) winter wheat under line-source irrigation. The line-source irrigation system provides evapotranspiration replacement in the nearest strip while the furthest strips were rain fed only. Nitrogen sources were applied in ten nutrient treatments ranging from 0-224 kg N ha-1 (supplied as inorganic ammonium nitrate) and 0-100 Mg ha-1 dry weight compost (organic material supplied as composted dairy waste). Compost decreased bulk density and increased gravimetric water content at the incorporated depth. The improved gravimetric water content suggests compost-amended soils can hold more moisture over a greater period of time. Compost treatments increased plant tillers and early plant height and dry matter production. When moisture was present, similar yields were obtained from compost and inorganic nitrogen fertilizers, although when moisture was limited, compost increased yield above that achieved by inorganic nitrogen fertilizers. Compost will have a greater impact on final yields in rain-fed climates rather than irrigated when compared to inorganic fertilizers.
