Recently, whole-body vibration (WBV) exercise has been gaining interest in the health/fitness community for its reported beneficial outcomes. However, most of these have not been evaluated scientifically leading to some reservation in promoting this new exercise modality. The purpose of this dissertation was to assess the viability of WBV exercise to enhance several selected indices of health. Study 1 demonstrated that the addition of WBV to an isometric semi-squat in young healthy men (n = 8, 25±2.6 y, 177±7.0 cm, 84±12.1 kg) resulted in increases in femoral artery blood flow and leg skin temperature vs the same exercise without vibration (NoV). These increases were seen without concomitant elevations in heart rate and mean arterial pressure suggesting WBV exercise may be a viable training modality for many, perhaps even those with compromised cardiovascular function. Study 2 demonstrated WBV exercise resulted in a greater oxygen consumption both during and following (8 and 24 h) the exercise bout compared to NoV in young healthy men (n = 8, during - 26±2.3 y, 180±8.2 cm, 84±10.1 kg and 5 of the same and 3 others following - 26±3.0 y, 179±8.3 cm, 85±7.3 kg). These increases in oxygen consumed suggest WBV exercise could be a viable training method to induce positive body composition changes with chronic exposure. Study 3 demonstrated that neither an acute bout of WBV nor NoV exercise caused a significant effect on muscle function, soreness, or inflammation in young healthy men (n = 10, 25±3.5 y, 179±7.2 cm, 81±7.9 kg). These data suggest WBV has no significant deleterious effects on muscle. Study 4 demonstrated that both the WBV and NoV exercise sessions improved insulin sensitivity in young healthy men (n=8, 27±2.4 y, 179±7.7 cm, 83±10.6 kg). These results suggest WBV may be an effective exercise mode for individuals with impaired glucose tolerance or even diabetes. Together these studies demonstrate significant potential health benefit of acute synchronous whole-body vibration exercise and illustrate a need for future mechanistic work determining how exposure to these high frequency low amplitude oscillations produce these benefits.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) has been shown to increase muscle fiber recruitment during isotonic contractions. No prior published studies have used elastic resistance. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the acute effects of a single bout of WBV on electromyography (EMG) activity during exercise when using elastic resistance. METHOD: 30 participants (14 male; 16 female) aged 18-30 were recruited for this study. Surface electromyography (sEMG) activity was then determined while participants performed the arm curl and squat using elastic resistance under three conditions: no vibration exposure, during acute vibration exposure, and immediately following acute vibration exposure. Seven muscles of interest were chosen: gastrocnemius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris biceps brachii, triceps brachii, and lateral deltoid. Vibration was administered using a vibration platform (Wave®; ProElite, Windsor, ON Canada) at a frequency of 35Hz at 2mm displacement amplitude. RESULTS: Results indicate significant increases (.05) in sEMG in all seven muscles of interest between the pre-vibration (control) trial and the vibration trial. Additionally, the vastus medialis, gastrocnemius, biceps brachii and lateral deltoid yielded increased sEMG activity immediately following vibration. CONCLUSION: These data suggest sEMG activity is significantly increased during WBV. These data also suggest sEMG activity is significantly increased immediately following WBV in the prime-movers of the squat and arm curl.

High-intensity intermittent or resistance activity for a short period of time causes an increased break down of energy stores and accumulation of metabolic by-products. Increased metabolic disturbances may lead to decreased muscle contractile function which eventually will lead to muscle fatigue. Sufficient recovery time is needed for optimal competitive performance and optimizing the ability to tolerate high-intensity, various lengths and duration training loads. There are a number of recovery modalities available that have been used between training sessions, pre- and post- training, and between competitions. In order to evaluate vibration as a recovery aid that contributes to improved performance, three studies were conducted. The first study evaluated the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) and WBV plus cooling on lower-body peak and mean anaerobic performance, leg volume, perceived recovery, and muscle soreness. The second study evaluated the effects of WBV and upper-body vibration (UBV) on upper-body performance, perceived recovery and muscle soreness, and the third study evaluated the effect of WBV on sprint performance, leg volume and perceived recovery. Healthy and physically active male and female volunteers participated in the studies. In a repeated measures, counterbalanced design, participants completed fatiguing exercise, each recovery treatment and performance test. As indicated by the group mean data, results of the first study suggested possible psychological but not performance enhancing benefits after the use of WBV and WBVC as a recovery method. The findings of the second study suggest no psychological or physiological benefits using WBV and UBV as a recovery modality. The results of the third study suggest no benefits for WBV in enhancing recovery or sprint performance. However, while actual recovery was not enhanced, perceived recovery was better after WBV compared to no vibration. Even though actual recovery or performance was not enhanced by the addition of WBV to the recovery, psychological perception of better recovery may be of some benefit for training or competition. It appears that acute exposure to WBV does not enhance performance under the conditions of this study.
