" Tobacco use has been associated with many adverse health effects, including oral health disease and cancer (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2019). In addition to the negative health impacts, smoking tobacco is costly to healthcare. Evidence shows that many people want to quit smoking but are often not screened for smoking cessation by their provider or dentist (CDC, 2019). This evidence-based practice (EBP) change project incorporated a tobacco cessation screening tool, with an intended goal of achieving 100% screen rates in a dental setting following the implementation of the 5A's smoking cessation screening model. The project also evaluated the number of patients referred to quit lines, received smoking cessation resources, and were referred to their primary care provider for pharmacotherapy. The dental team were educated on the 5A's behavioral change model, given a pre and post educational survey to assess their knowledge of the 5A's model, and given a 5A's screening questionnaire to be utilized during each patient encounter. At project completion, the aggregate percentage of patients screened for smoking cessation was 97%. The aggregate percentage of patients referred to the Quitline was 4.4%, 7.3% of patients received smoking cessation materials, and 0.98% of patients were referred to their PCP for pharmacotherapy. Recommendations were made to the practice site for policy change and future work. Millions of Americans use e-cigarettes. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults. Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes reviews and critically assesses the state of the emerging evidence about e-cigarettes and health. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

In 2007, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) make recommendations on how to reduce tobacco initiation and encourage cessation in both military and veteran populations. In its 2009 report, Combating Tobacco in Military and Veteran Populations, the authoring committee concludes that to prevent tobacco initiation and encourage cessation, both DoD and VA should implement comprehensive tobacco-control programs.
