Book Description
The results of axial fatigue tests of transverse butt welded joints in HY-80 steel containing internal defects are reported. The tests were conducted on 3/4 in. and 1-1/2 in. thick material under stress cycles of zero- to-tension and complete reversal. The types of weld defects studied include porosity, slag inclusions, and artificially produced pores, and show that the existence of weld defects measurably decreases the fatigue life of a joint at a given stress cycle when compared to sound welded specimens (with reinforcement removed). However, there does not appear to be a simple correlation between type of defect or amount of defective area and fatigue strength. As part of the study of weld defects, radiographic and ultrasonic techniques were employed to determine the time to initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in welded joints. The subsequent crack propagation progresses slowly and erratically at first, but the rate of growth is rapidly accelerated from the time it reaches the specimen surface until complete failure occurs. Metallurgical studies were conducted to examine the effect of restraint during welding on the formation of internal microcracks (sulfide inclusions) in welded joints, and the behavior of these joints under conditions of fatigue.

Book Description
Defective welds in 3/4 in. HY-80 steel and the fatigue behavior of such welds were investigated. Included were lack of penetration, porosity, and slag inclusions; the major types of internal weld flaws which are likely to occur under field conditions. Methods of consistently producing these weld flaws were developed which made possible the prediction of the size and location of the flaws. Various means of non-destructive testing, including visual, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, and radiographic inspection, were used to investigate the defective weldments. In addition, a method of measuring the size and the depth of the flaws in the welds was developed. Axial fatigue tests on plain plate specimens and transverse buttwelded specimens have been conducted to investigate the effects of surface condition and the presence of defective welds on the behavior of such members. The results of the tests have indicated that the flaws can have a marked effect on the fatigue resistance of the members. (Author).

Book Description
Axial load fatigue tests on various types of welded joints and weldments in HY-80 steel are reported. The tests were carried out using three stress cycles; complete reversal, zero-totension, and half tension-to-tension. Most of the test lives lie between 2,000 and 600,000 cycles. These results have been used to develop Modified Goodman diagrams. A preliminary series of fatigue tests was carried out to study the effects of interpass temperature, lack of penetration, type of electrode, and longitudinal fillet welded attachments. When the specimens of a given test series failed due to an internal flaw, there was often a large amount of scatter in the test lives at a given stress level. Apparently internal weld flaws have a significant effect on the fatigue behavior of a welded joint. (Author).
