An additional event, comprising Part One of this volume, was held to consider values, ethics, and ecosystem issues from a global perspective. The presenters considered the historic influence of values and ethics in the development of societies; reflected on the role of values and ethics globally; addressed the relationship of values and ethics to justice; and examined how the valuing of life locally, and the local consequences of global conditions, can deny justice. Part Two comprises the proceedings of the Forum on Human Settlements, Human Solidarity, and Global Ecosystems: A Conservation. The panelists spoke and then participated with the audience in a plenary conversation concerning the issues that link the requirements of human settlements, viable communities, and healthy and diverse ecosystems.

Book Description
Architects and Architecture of London is a visual, highly illustrated guide to London’s greatest historic buildings and the lives of the architects who designed them. Read about the architectural forefathers of London, such as Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Robert Adam and John Nash, Butterfield and Street, Blomfield and Lutyens. Learn about those who, in the twentieth century, have helped to form the London we now know, right up to familiar names such as Rogers and Foster. And then there are the others who, in amongst the great and remembered architects, stand as the forgotten majority: talented architects such as Arthur Davis, who designed the Ritz hotel. In the constantly changing patterns of London’s architecture, why do some buildings stand as testament to their architect(s), while others obscure their names from history? The book is organised by architect, to provide an easy point of reference for today’s designers and students and all those interested in the architectural history of London. Architects and Architecture of London illuminates the city’s two thousand year architectural history, through the lives and works of historic architects who remain salient and significant in London’s contemporary architectural geography. What the press said about Ken Allinson's London's Contemporary Architecture: An Explorer's Guide: 'Highly recommended . . . the book is crammed with maps and colour pictures with clear explanations about the design of the buildings.' Evening Standard 'The perfect accompaniment to a walk around the capital.' Homes and Gardens

Book Description
A richly detailed history of Britain at its imperial zenith, revealing the simmering tensions and explosive rivalries beneath the opulent surface of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. The popular memory of Britain in the years before the Great War is of a powerful, contented, orderly, and thriving country. Britain commanded a vast empire: she bestrode international commerce. Her citizens were living longer, profiting from civil liberties their grandparents only dreamed of and enjoying an expanding range of comforts and pastimes. The mood of pride and self-confidence can be seen in Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance marches, newsreels of George V’s coronation, and London’s great Edwardian palaces. Yet beneath the surface things were very different In The Age of Decadence, Simon Heffer exposes the contradictions of late-Victorian and Edwardian Britain. He explains how, despite the nation’s massive power, a mismanaged war against the Boers in South Africa created profound doubts about her imperial destiny. He shows how attempts to secure vital social reforms prompted the twentieth century’s gravest constitutional crisis—and coincided with the worst industrial unrest in British history. He describes how politicians who conceded the vote to millions more men disregarded women so utterly that female suffragists’ public protest bordered on terrorism. He depicts a ruling class that fell prey to degeneracy and scandal. He analyses a national psyche that embraced the motor-car, the sensationalist press, and the science fiction of H. G. Wells, but also the nostalgia of A. E. Housman.

Book Description
In this brilliantly witty satire -- a bestseller in the UK -- a prestigious British museum launches an ambitious new exhibit...which quickly becomes a seasonal nightmare. Think that a day in the life of a London museum director is cold, quiet, and austere? Think again. Giles Waterfield brings a combination of intellectual comedy and knockabout farce to the subject in this story of one long day in a museum full of scandals, screw-upsŠand more than a few scalawags. At the beginning of The Hound in the Left-hand Corner, Auberon, the brilliant but troubled director of the Museum of British History, is preparing one midsummer's day for the opening of the most spectacular exhibition his museum has ever staged. The centerpiece is a painting of the intriguing Lady St. John strikingly attired as Puck, which hasn't been shown in London in a hundred years. As the day passes, the portrait arouses disquieting questions, jealousies, rivalries -- and more than a few strange affections -- in the minds of the museum staff. As guests and employees pour in, the tension rises -- and Auberon himself has the hilariously ridiculous task of keeping the peace, without losing his own sense of reality as well. For everyone who loves the farce of David Lodge and Michael Frayn, or even the Antiques Roadshow, the fast-paced, hilarious satire of The Hound in the Left-hand Corner is sure to delight and entertain.
