Book Description
India's journey in education, particularly its examination system, has been a compelling narrative of transformation, challenges, and continuous evolution. Since gaining independence in 1947, India has navigated a complex path to develop an education system that meets the needs of a diverse and rapidly growing population. The examination system, as a critical component of this journey, reflects the broader socio-economic, cultural, and political changes that the country has undergone over the past seven decades. This book, "India's Education Examination System: From Independence to the Present," aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the evolution, reforms, and current practices within India's examination system. By delving into the historical context, key reforms, and future directions, this book offers an in-depth understanding of how India has shaped its education policies to address the aspirations and challenges of its people. The examination system, often criticized for its rigidity and high-stakes nature, has seen numerous reforms aimed at making it more inclusive, equitable, and reflective of students' diverse talents and capabilities. From the early post-independence commissions, such as the University Education Commission and the Secondary Education Commission, to contemporary policies like the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, each chapter of this book explores the milestones and turning points that have defined India's examination landscape.

Book Description
Despite great progress around the world in getting more kids into schools, too many leave without even the most basic skills. In India’s rural Andhra Pradesh, for instance, only about one in twenty children in fifth grade can perform basic arithmetic. The problem is that schooling is not the same as learning. In The Rebirth of Education, Lant Pritchett uses two metaphors from nature to explain why. The first draws on Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom’s book about the difference between centralized and decentralized organizations, The Starfish and the Spider. Schools systems tend be centralized and suffer from the limitations inherent in top-down designs. The second metaphor is the concept of isomorphic mimicry. Pritchett argues that many developing countries superficially imitate systems that were successful in other nations— much as a nonpoisonous snake mimics the look of a poisonous one. Pritchett argues that the solution is to allow functional systems to evolve locally out of an environment pressured for success. Such an ecosystem needs to be open to variety and experimentation, locally operated, and flexibly financed. The only main cost is ceding control; the reward would be the rebirth of education suited for today’s world.

Book Description
This volume examines how the public and private domains in school education in India are informed and mediated by current market realities. It moves beyond the simplistic dichotomy of pro-state versus promarket factors that define most current debates in the formulations of educational reform agendas to underline how they need to be interpreted in the larger context. The chapters in the volume present a series of conceptual and empirical investigations to understand the growth of private schools in India; investigate the largely uncontested claims made by the private sector regarding provision of superior quality of education; and their ability to address the educational needs of the poor. Further, the book looks at how the private–public dichotomy has been extended to professional identity of teachers and teaching practices as well. Rich in primary data and supported by detailed case studies, this volume will be of interest to teachers, scholars and researchers dealing with education, educational policy, school education and public policy. It will also interest policy makers, think tanks and civil society organisations.

Book Description
This book comprehensively chronicles the history of the education policymaking in India from 1947 to 2016 with a focus on the developments after 1964 when the Kothari Commission was constituted. The book is informed by the rare insights acquired by the author while making policy at the state, national, and international levels of governance. Another distinguishing feature of this book lies in the attention it pays to the process and politics of policymaking and the larger setting—or, to use jargon, the political and policy environment— in which policies were made at different points of time. The author brings out a crucial analysis of the Indian educational system against the backdrop of national and global political, economic, and educational developments. Two other distinguishing features of the book are the systematic treatment of the regulation of education and the role of judiciary in the making and implementation of education policies.
