The Bivocal Nation
Author: Nutsa Batiashvili
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319622862
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
This book is about a divided nation and polarized nationhood. Its principal purpose is to examine division and polarization as forms of imagining that are configured within culture and framed by history. This is what bivocality signifies—two distinct discursive voices through which nationhood is articulated; voices that are nonetheless grounded in a culturally common symbolic field. The volume offers an ethnographically centered analysis of the ways in which Georgians make use of these voices in critical discourses of nationhood. By illuminating the cultural semantics behind these discourses, Nutsa Batiashvili offers a new constellation of conceptual terms for understanding modern forms of nationalism and nation-building in the marginal or liminal landscapes between the Orient and the Occident.

Art and Identity at the Water's Edge
Author: Tricia Cusack
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351575732
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
The water's edge, whether shore or riverbank, is a marginal territory that becomes invested with layers of meaning. The essays in this collection present intriguing perspectives on how the water's edge has been imagined and represented in different places at various times and how this process contributed to the formation of social identities. Art and Identity at the Water's Edge focuses upon national coastlines and maritime heritage; on rivers and seashore as regions of liminality and sites of conflicting identities; and on the edge as a tourist setting. Such themes are related to diverse forms of art, including painting, architecture, maps, photography, and film. Topics range from the South African seaside resort of Durban to the French Riviera. The essays explore successive ideological mappings of the Jordan River, and how Czech cubist architecture and painting shaped a new nationalist reading of the Vltava riverbanks. They examine post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans as a filmic spectacle that questions assumptions about American identity, and the coast depicted as a site of patriotism in nineteenth-century British painting. The collection demonstrates how waterside structures such as maritime museums and lighthouses, and visual images of the water's edge, have contributed to the construction of cultural and national identities.

Identity and Privacy in the Internet Age
Author: Audun Jøsang
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642047661
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
The NordSec workshops were started in 1996 with the aim of bringing together - searchers and practitioners within computer security in the Nordic countries – thereby establishing a forum for discussions and co-operation between universities, industry and computer societies. Since then, the workshop has developed into a fully fledged inter- tional information security conference, held in the Nordic countries on a round robin basis. The 14th Nordic Conference on Secure IT Systems was held in Oslo on 14-16 October 2009. Under the theme Identity and Privacy in the Internet Age, this year's conference explored policies, strategies and technologies for protecting identities and the growing flow of personal information passing through the Internet and mobile n- works under an increasingly serious threat picture. Among the contemporary security issues discussed were security services modeling, Petri nets, attack graphs, electronic voting schemes, anonymous payment schemes, mobile ID-protocols, SIM cards, n- work embedded systems, trust, wireless sensor networks, privacy, privacy disclosure regulations, financial cryptography, PIN verification, temporal access control, random number generators, and some more. As a pre-cursor to the conference proper, the Nordic Security Day on Wednesday 14 October hosted talks by leading representatives from industry, academia and the g- ernment sector, and a press conference was given.

Punk Rock is My Religion
Author: Francis Stewart
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1351725564
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
As religion has retreated from its position and role of being the glue that holds society together, something must take its place. Utilising a focused and detailed study of Straight Edge punk (a subset of punk in which adherents abstain from drugs, alcohol and casual sex) Punk Rock is My Religion argues that traditional modes of religious behaviours and affiliations are being rejected in favour of key ideals located within a variety of spaces and experiences, including popular culture. Engaging with questions of identity construction through concepts such as authenticity, community, symbolism and music, this book furthers the debate on what we mean by the concepts of ‘religion’ and ‘secular’. Provocatively exploring the notion of salvation, redemption, forgiveness and faith through a Straight Edge lens, it suggests that while the study of religion as an abstraction is doomed to a simplistic repetition of dominant paradigms, being willing to examine religion as a lived experience reveals the utility of a broader and more nuanced approach.
