Lectures on ecstatic temporality and on Heideggers political legacy. In Ecstasy, Catastrophe, David Farrell Krell provides insight into two areas of Heideggers thought: his analysis of ecstatic temporality in Being and Time (1927)and his political remarks in the recently published Black Notebooks (19311941). The first part of Krells book focuses on Heideggers interpretation of time, which Krell takes to be one of Heideggers greatest philosophical achievements. In addition to providing detailed commentary on ecstatic temporality, Krell considers Derridas analysis of ekstasis in his first seminar on Heidegger, taught in Paris in 19641965. Krell also relates ecstatic temporality to the work of other philosophers, including Aristotle, Augustine, Kant, Schelling, Hölderlin, and Merleau-Ponty; he then analyzes Dasein as infant and child, relating ecstatic temporality to the mirror stage theory of Jacques Lacan. The second part of the book turns to Heideggers Black Notebooks, which have received a great deal of critical attention in the press and in philosophical circles. Notorious for their pejorative references to Jews and Jewish culture, the Notebooks exhibit a level of polemic throughout that Krell takes to be catastrophic in and for Heideggers thought. Heideggers legacy therefore seems to be split between the best and the worst of thinkingsomewhere between ecstasy and catastrophe. Based on the 2014 Brauer Lectures in German Studies at Brown University, the book communicates the fruits of Krells many years of work on Heidegger in an engaging and accessible style.

Sensible Ecstasy investigates the attraction to excessive forms of mysticism among twentieth-century French intellectuals and demonstrates the work that the figure of the mystic does for these thinkers. With special attention to Georges Bataille, Simone de Beauvoir, Jacques Lacan, and Luce Irigaray, Amy Hollywood asks why resolutely secular, even anti-Christian intellectuals are drawn to affective, bodily, and widely denigrated forms of mysticism. What is particular to these thinkers, Hollywood reveals, is their attention to forms of mysticism associated with women. They regard mystics such as Angela of Foligno, Hadewijch, and Teresa of Avila not as emotionally excessive or escapist, but as unique in their ability to think outside of the restrictive oppositions that continue to afflict our understanding of subjectivity, the body, and sexual difference. The Ruse of Techne offers a reappraisal of Heidegger’s entire work by focusing on the forms of activity he regards as separate from instrumentality. Non-instrumental activities like authenticity, poetry, and thinking—in short, the ineffectual—are critical for Heidegger as they offer the only path to the truth of being throughout his work. By unearthing the source of the conception of non-instrumental action in Heidegger’s reading of Aristotle, Vardoulakis elaborates how it forms part of Heidegger’s response to an old problem, namely, how to account for difference after positing a single and unified being that is not amenable to change. He further demonstrates that an action without ends and effects leads to an ethics and politics rife with difficulties and contradictions that only become starker when compared to other responses to the same problem that we find in the philosophical tradition and which rely on instrumentality. Heidegger’s conception of an action without ends or effect forgets the role of instrumentality in the tradition that posits a single, unified being. And yet, the ineffectual has had a profound influence in how continental philosophy determines the ethical and the political since World War II. The critique of the ineffectual in Heidegger is thus effectively a critique of the conception of praxis in continental philosophy. Vardoulakis proposes that it is urgent to undo the forgetting of instrumentality if we are to conceive of a democratic politics and an ethics fit to respond to the challenges of high capitalism.

Temporal Experiments: Seven Ways of Configuring Time in Art and Literature conducts an expansive exploration of different modes of timing. Its seven chapters pursue the question of time as it is embodied in key figures that shape both aesthetic and pragmatic life. Working closely with literary, visual, and musical artworks, the book aims to provoke new ways of engaging with the question of time. It treats artworks as experiments that launch temporal figures, and that test out the possibilities and connections these different figures enable. Thus, the book seizes upon works by artists like Anne Carson, King Tubby, and Raymond Queneau as opportunities for thinking through the valence of both existing and untested temporal configurations. What other modes of shaping time, it asks, might be conjured out of the viewing of an Omer Fast film, the reading of a poem by Baudelaire, or of a novel by Tom McCarthy? In treating artworks as temporal experiments, this book stresses the fact that artworks always experiment with the raw materials of time, fashioning it or refashioning it into novel combinations. This book follows the imperatives of these experiments in order to advance a nuanced understanding of the way time insinuates itself into all aspects of social and intellectual life.
