Accompagner les parents et autres proches d'autistes, comme Anne accompagne Matthieu. Le narrateur ne donnepas de leçon ni de mode d'emploi. C'est le bon sens et l'amour non angélique de parents qui guide l'action. Il ne s'agit pas non plus de partir en guerre contre l'autisme ou de le vaincre, mais de l'apprivoiser en jouant, le jeu ayant permis de sortir Matthieu de sa retraite. Nous n'avons pas l'habitude de publier des témoignages dans la collection Mutations habituellement consacrée aux sciences humaines et nous exerçons une certaines méfiance à l'égard de ce mode d'expression. Il nous a pourtant semblé que ce récit avait valeur d'essai et qu'il inspirait une autre manière de vivre avec les autistes et handicapés. Le livre s'adresse donc tant aux parents et familles d'enfants autistes, mais il devrait également fournir des clés de compréhension aux " professionnels " enseignants, médecins, puéricultrices etc. Plus largement encore une manière stimulante et réconciliatrice pour tout citoyen, sur sa manière de vivre et de regarder les handicapés.
