Bt Cotton vis-à-vis Traditional Cotton Varieties: The Economics and Returns in the State of Maharashtra in India
Author: Vasant P. Gandhi
Publisher: Allied Publishers
ISBN: 8184245866
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 84
Book Description
Breakthroughs in science and technology often produce stunning results such as in the green revolution which swept through much of Asia averting the food crisis. Given the present slowing of agricultural growth and rising commodity prices, breakthroughs are once again urgently required and this has put biotechnology at the forefront of a new potential green revolution. One of the frontrunners in this has been development of Bt Cotton which was introduced into India in 2002, amidst much hesitation, after its induction in a large number of other countries. Whereas it has been accepted and has spread rapidly in India leading to a substantial growth in cotton production, there are conflicting reports about its success and various issues and problems have been raised. In light of this, the book examines the performance of Bt Cotton vis-à-vis non-Bt Cotton in the state of Maharashtra which is the largest cotton growing state by area. This is part of a coordinated study undertaken by the authors for the Ministry of Agriculture covering four major cotton states—Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu—which together account for about 70 percent of the country's cotton production. The book examines the adoption, experience, performance and economics of Bt cotton in Maharashtra. It reports on the advantages, disadvantages as well as other observations on Bt cotton as conveyed by the farmers of the state.

A Frayed History
Author: Meena Menon
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199091498
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 459
Book Description
Once the envy of the world for its quality and variety, Indian cotton today is mired in uncertainty and despair. Though India is the largest producer of cotton, its farmers are trapped in debt, and thousands choose to kill themselves than face an ignominious fate. Handloom weavers, once proud standard-bearers of the country's artisanal heritage, are barely able to scrape together a living. To make matters worse, there is the back-breaking competition with artificial fibres. Meena Menon and Uzramma take us through the fascinating history of cotton in India, examining its illustrious origins, its blood-stained colonial heritage, and the events that led to its current crisis. Amid the bleakness, the authors suggest a silver lining: reviving indigenous cotton—and the handloom industry that spun its fame. Through painstaking research, Menon and Uzramma show that with the right combination of friendly policies and championing the Indian cotton brand, it is possible to restore the fabric's past glory. This is an important book not just for lovers of cotton but anyone concerned with the struggles of Indian agriculture in a brutal, fast-changing market.

The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies.
